The musician of the turists
Living music in a subculture. Musical aspects of one of today's island communities
| 1969-1975 On Anholt, an island community of fishermen between Denmark and Sweden, there has been a very lively though somewhat refined folk music milieu since the 1920's, stimulated by the turists. Here we find a more spontaneous form of musical gathering which is kept alive by the informal turism and which in this particular way preserves cartain aspects of the island's natural social pattern. Contrary to the case of Nørre Djurs county, mass media such as radio, televison and records early play an important part of an island society with limited recourse to music through direct human human influence and cultural exchange. On Anholt the musical development and structure which is created by technical mass media is nowadays being blended with a melodic tradition of a rather Swedish persuasion.
