Tamiya 14083 Suzuki RGV500 Telefonica Movistar.
This project started in September 2001, finished September
2001.
This bike was Kenny Roberts ride when he became
world champion in 2000.
I was thrilled when Tamiya released this 2000 edition of the
RGV, sponsored by spanish telecom giant Telefonica Movistar.
The kit was buildt Out of the box.
Preparation
Cleaned up the parts, filled a few minor
areas, sanded back and rubbed the bodywork with 2000 grit sanding
paper.
Painting
After some studies I decided to try a mix
of TS-50 mica blue and TS-51 telefonica blue, and I also decided
to paint a white base on all of the bodywork to hide join lines,
because the blue paint would need to be fairly thick to cover
these lines, and if the blue paint is buildt up too thick it
will be too dark.
Therefore I only applied two coats of blue over my base wich
was Finisher's Base White, a laquer wich dries in minutes that
I got from a friend in Hong Kong.
Modeler's super clear was used over the decals to seal them in.
I used Alclad II highly polished alu on the frame and rear swing
as well as the exhausts, and here's how the exhausts are further
painted:
cut small strips of masking tape and mask off the weld seams,
then airbrush clear yellow all over, then some clear orange fading
out from each weld seam, and finally Humbrol polished steel in
a thin line directly over the masking tape, so that a shade appears
when the tape is removed. Clear blue can then be airbrushed or
drybrushed over selected areas, and X-19 smoke can also be used
to tone down the effect slightly.
For additional painting guides I refer to
previous projects.
Decaling
The kit decals are superb and easy to lay
down using only a hot towel to bend them around sharp edges.
Make sure the clear coat goes well around all edges to seal the
decals properly at these places.
I added some carbon decals to the inside of the fairing and used
Aero sol to lay these down.
Detailing
I added a 2D sensor to the front fork made
from guitar string and tamiya's plastic tube, and replaced some
cables with thinner ones from Modeler's. I also added a front
wheel speed sensor cable in accordance with the box art. Some
black Modeler's seat belt fabric was used around the brake fluid
container cap, reference material shows a piece of fabric is
used here.
As I buildt this kit to be displayed with it's bodywork on I
paid no attention to hidden details. See
