need to download entire books to start reading. The compact
book 'database' file is 32k bytes and provides easy online access to around 700 of the more than 10.000 Project Gutenberg
etexts.
Compressed eBooks and documents
MicroReader 1.4 (for color phones only) can read compressed files.
Palm DOC, also known as Aportis format is a de-facto standard for Palm PDAs,
and is also used by applications on other platforms.
Thousands of documents can be found on the internet.
The TCR format is not as widespread, but offers better speed and compression.
It was designed by Ian Young, Barry Childress and
others, and has been used by several reader applications for the EPOC/Psion and Symbian platforms.
Andrew Giddings' TCR is an open source implementation
of the compression tools.
TCR and Palm DOC compression has the advantage of fast random access.
Files compressed with ZIP or LZMA must be decompressed from the start of the file,
which means it takes a bit longer to open a page near the end of the document.
MicroReader cannot read encrypted or copy-protected documents.
However, it is easy to convert a Microsoft .lit file to Mobipocket .prc with
Windows GUI for convert lit
and Mobipocket Publisher.
Installation
On 65 series phones such as CX65, install MicroReader.jar like any other Java application,
for example in the folder /java/jam/Applications/MicroReader.
(Installation is very easy if you beam the file to the phone with IrDA.
Simply "view" the received file and the phone software will install it.)
MicroReader is able to access files in all user folders on these phones, but the default locations are \Misc and \Text.
Note that MicroReader uses the actual folder names, like file system tool found in the phone's "Extras" menu of CX65,
or browsing the file system from a PC with a data cable.
On SL45i, S55, M55 etc., install MicroReader.jar and MicroReader.jad in /java/jam/MicroReader,
and store your text files in the folder /java/jam/MicroReader/storage.
(MicroReader.jad is not needed with v1.4).
When copying .txt files from the PC, remember to switch off file-conversion in the PC sync software, or use another file extension than .txt .
