1967 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Holiday coupe with
option L-66: Turnpike Cruising Package ("TPC")

This a picture of my car in Costa Mesa right after I bought it.

This car is what Oldsmobile could have named 242. I guess the most of you have heard about the Olds 442 based on the F-85/ Cutlass intermediate Olds. But not many have heard of the Turnpike Cruising Package option. A Cutlass equipped with this option (also referred to as L-66) differs from the famous 442 in only this areas:

  • 2 barrel carburetor (instead of the 442s 4 barrel)

  • Different camshaft (lowering the max torque from 3600 to 2600 rpm(some say 3000))

  • 2:41 to 1 rear axle ratio

  • You also had to order the car with Turbo Hydramatic 3 speed automatic transmission, and all TPC had Climatic Combustion Control as standard equipment.

The TPC could only be ordered on Cutlass Supremes (same as 442).

The price of the package was 142.18 $, but because you had to order the car with TH 400 aut., who was priced at 236,97 $ it became an expensive option 142.18 + 236.97= 380.15 $ (related to the price of 442 who was 184.31 $)

What was the benefit of the package ? You got a car that used less gas ! who was pulling nearly as strong as a 442, but you had to suffer some acceleration (but not much).

Here is some tests from 1967:

Turnpike Cruiser:

O-60 mph in 8.2 seconds 1/4 mile in 16 seconds Car Life April 1967
O-60 mph in 8.7 seconds 1/4 mile in 16.5 seconds MotorTrend Feb. 1967

442

0-60 mph in 7.1 seconds 1/4 mile in 15.5 seconds MotorTrend Feb. 1967

According to Motor Trend the mileage range increased from 12-15 mpg (442) to 15.7-18.1 (Turnpike cruiser)
