The 4A is the number of the block and are used with different
tops and other modes.
The digits after - tells about the top and the fuel system.

Toyota 4A-GE 16V
This engine was delivered in MR2 mk1 and some corolla's from 1984 to
199? and have 112HP to 130HP
it depends on where it was delivered, In Europe it had 124HP(10:1comp)
and the US edition was delivered with a cat. so it provided only 112HP(9,4:1comp).
The best engines we find in the home country, Japan where it had 130HP(1?:1
comp). The engine is "not" a complete Toyota, because it was designed
and produced by Yamaha, but it's a good and reliable engine. This engine
have a lot of stuff to make it even grater, the connecting rods and crankshaft
will withstand up to 170HP and 8000RPM (Told by TRD). It's many firms that
still produce parts for this engine, still after it has been taken away
from the production. The 4A-GE have many friends in US and Australia and
have been used in many rally and racing cars.

Toyota 4A-GZE
The 4A-GZE some is the name of the super charger was delivered
only in MR2 mk1 from 1987 to 1989 and in the Levin. I don't know
so much about that car, only it has been produced later then the MR2 but
I don't know when it was last delivered. ( If you got more info please
mail me so this site can be right)
The Super Charger has 145HP(8,0:1) or 165HP(8,9:1comp), also here
is the home market the lucky one with the NICEST 165HP and US with the
cat. has "only" 145HP edition. The engine has allot of upgrade possibilities
and from HKS you can get oversize crankshaft pulley, stroker kit and Twin
charger turbo kit. I have hear that this can give you 400HP
but I don't know it is truth. The internal different between 4A-GE and
the SC are the block has been strengthened, dished forged pistons, increased
connecting rod journal diameter from 40 to 42mm and the piston pin diameter
are changed from 18mm to 20mm.

Toyota 4A-GE 20V
The 4A-GE 20valve is a pretty new the first of the where produced in
1990 and they are also delivered to day in the Toyota Corolla Levin BZ-R
and BZ-G the R is a funny car with 6 speed transmission (Spec: e-ae111-acfvf,
1= 3,166, 2=2,050, 3=1,481, 4=1,166, 5=0,916, 6=0,725)
and recaro seats! But is only delivered in, Yes guess what it JAPAN.
Why is the funny cars only delivered in Japan??? The 4A-GE 20V have 165HP
W/7800RPM, 16,5KGM W/5600RPM, 11:1comp on the news version and 160HP one
the "old" one. This engine must be VERY funny to drive with the RPM you
have to give it to pull.
