  • April 12, 1999
    Five National Liberation Army guerrillas hijack a Fokker-50 of the Colombian airline Avianca flying from Bucaramanga to Bogata, and take it to a clandestine airstrip in northern Colombia. Forty six passengers and crewmembers are taken into the nearby Simiti forest, before some are released in small groups. Around 16 were still being held as of September.

    Three Pakistani nationals hijack a Pakistan International Airlines Fokker 27 on a domestic flight to protest nuclear tests in southwestern Balouchistan. The hijackers are arrested May 25 in Hyderabad, 160 kilometers (100 miles) from Karachi, after the plane landed there with 29 people on board.

    An Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 767 flying from Addis Ababa to Abidjan via Nairobi is hijacked by Ethiopian pirates over Kenya and crash lands in the Indian Ocean north of the Grande Comore island after running out of fuel. During the landing, 125 of the 175 people on board are killed.

    A Sudan Airways Airbus A-310 is hijacked by seven Iraqis between Khartoum and Amman with 199 people on board. It flies to London's Stansted airport, where the pirates give themselves up, ending the 20-hour affair.

    A member of the Aum sect hijacks a Japanese Boeing 747 with 365 passengers at the airport in northern Hakodate, demanding the release of the sect's leader, Shoko Asahara. Security forces storm the jumbo jet 16 hours later, releasing all the passengers safely.

    Four Algerian Islamist militants take over an Air France Airbus A-300 with 239 people on board at the airport in Algiers. The chief hijacker is a member of the extremist Armed Islamic Group (GIA). Three passengers are executed. On December 26, the plane leaves for Marseille, southern France, where a French commando unit launches an assault, freeing the passengers while killing the four hostage takers.

    A man reported to be seeking the release of imprisoned Hindu nationalists hijacks an Indian airlines plane carrying 48 passengers, but surrenders shortly afterward.

    A man who gave his name as Hari Singh threatens to blow up an Indian Airlines Airbus A-300 with 192 passengers and nine crew aboard. The man surrenders five hours after landing at Amritsar with all the passengers and crew having left the plane safely

    An Indian Airlines plane with about 90 passengers on board is hijacked by a group of students. Ten students take over the Boeing 737 flight on its way to Delhi from the city of Lucknow and force the pilot to fly back toward Lucknow. Passengers later overpower the students and the plane lands at Lucknow and all passengers on board are safe.

    An Indian Airlines Boeing 737 with 135 passengers and six crew aboard is hijacked by a lone hijacker who demanded to be flown to Kabul. The plane lands at Amritsar where paramilitary commandos storm the hijacked airliner and he is killed. All other passengers and crew are safe.

    A Kuwait Airlines Boeing 747 is diverted to Mashad, Iran with 111 people on board. Seven hijackers demand the release of Shiite Muslim extremists being held in Kuwait. Two passengers are killed during the 16-day ordeal which ends in Algiers after an aborted landing attempt in Beirut and a stopover in Larnaca, Cyprus.

    Hijackers take over an Iraqi Airways Boeing 737 with 91 people on board during a flight from Baghdad to Amman. It lands in Arar, Saudi Arabia where it explodes, killing 62 people.
  • November 23, 1985
    An EgyptAir Boeing 737 flying to Cairo with 97 people on board is hijacked by three pirates who take it to Malta before demanding to go to Libya or Tunisia. Two passengers are killed and thrown out of the plane before Egyptian commandos storm the plane after 22 hours of talks.
    Sixty-one people are killed in the assault, including two hijackers.

    A TWA Boeing 727 flying from Athens to Rome with 153 people on board is hijacked to Beirut. Three Lebanese Shiite Muslim militants demand the release of more than 750 Lebanese and Palestinians being held in Israel. Ten days later, Israel releases 31 mostly Shiite Lebanese prisoners. A US hostage is killed in Beirut between two brief stopovers in Algiers. After 17 days, the last hostages are freed with the help of Syria.

    A Kuwait Airways Airbus flying to Karachi with 161 people on board is hijacked to Teheran by four Palestinians who demand the release of 17 people being held in Kuwaiti prisons. Two US passengers are killed. Iranian security forces launch an assault after six days, freeing the last hostages.
