The North Sea is a gigantic industrial zone producing oil and gas. The
various fields and operators are many filled with the best kind of oil.
The Ekofisk field is among the oldest and richest fields. Frigg and Statfjord are also
major fields. Statsfjord is exceptional on account of its size and its reserves.
Stavanger Cathedral is not only an external symbol of Stavanger's greatness in the
middle ages, but a gathering place for a religious life that is alive today; frequent
services and church concerts are well attended. The sculptures and ornamentation are
easy to see, among them heads of the 13th century kings and the magnificent 17th century
wood carving on the placque of epitaphs and the pulpit.
Stavanger has not a great history, but also a wide culture within theater, music and parks.
As an example is Rogaland Theatre. Drama has long been popular in Stavanger. The "new"
theatre dates from 1883, although it has been modernized and extended in the 1980s.
Productions on both the main stage and the pocket-size "Intimscenen" have been praised
by critics all over Scandinavia in the past few decades.
Bjerksted Park has a varied history, form being a merchant family's country house, to
servering as an outdoor stage for festivitiess and dances, mission-centre and exhibition hall.
Today it is a vital music centre with several bildings housing a music school and
conservatorium. The heart of the comples is the Concert Hall where the Stavanger Symphony
Orchestra preforms regularly and where concerts and musical events feature famous artists
form Norway and abroad.
