Content Most Important
No matter what sort of picture you have in your mind of how it is going to be, the content
of the homepage is most important. The design it is put in is also vital, but only to
promote the content. If you want visitors to read and come back, you must have a content
that wants them to come and visit your homepage again.
Design to Promote
The design shall promote your content, your message to the visitors. It must be a design
which is typical for your site and which matches the content.
Easy Navigation
One of the most vital ways of promoting the content through design is to make an easy
navigation. The web site must be logical build, with a standard main menu which covers
the main options of the content.
The First Steps
When you have found the theme(s) of your homepage, which the content will spin around,
you must start drawing. Yes, that is right, drawing. Take a pencil and a normal piece of
paper and draw that outline. When you finally feel you have found the shapes and colors
then you may start trying to make it into a electronic version. You will make many adjustments
from the outline to the HTML tags.
Beware!
If you are using a generator (i.e. MS Frontpage (Express) or Netscape Composer) or know little of HTML tags,
and you use the methods of drawing outlines, be sure to make the shapes and general design as
"straight" and easy as possible. Do not have to high ambitions the first times. That will
only lead to confusing homepages.
