Report from early November 2006 by John Diefenbach

Notes from a short visit to Daban last week, 11/2-4/06.

QJ 6911 Youth Culture, and crane 5203, are mounted on a short track segment near the
new Jitong office building. 6911 looks complete, but is not being kept up cosmetically.

There are a total of 28 QJs and 5 cranes at Daban, including the above. QJs are:

6878
6891
6911
6977
6978

6981
6984
6986
6991
6992

6996
7007
7009
7010
7012

7030
7037
7038
7041
7048

7049
7063
7104
7105
7119

7143
7163
7164

Cranes are:

5203
5204
5208
5209
5212

The locomotives are generally decrepit, none appear in ready working condition, most are missing parts, and the cabs I looked into had been stripped. I was told that they would all
be cut up next year- except 6911 and the crane- but the parking areas were clean and there was no sign of recent cutting work.

I have simple documentary shots of each QJ and crane, and anyone who'd like a copy is welcome if you'll drop me a line at dmac@ma.rosenet.ne.jp

John Diefenbach

PS: Same state of affairs at my visit to hte depot on April 12, 2007. However, engine 4335, thge old museum engine, was being fixed up for display at Reshui!

Passenger locomotives : QJ 6478 and 6996
Most engines noted above had Daban depot code on their tender and brigade 7 and 8 signs on their cabs.

Scrap locomotives in Daban, being cut up during early November 2000

(after having been on the scrap line for at least one year): a tender marked 7040, locomotives number 6027, 6079, + one more, maybe 3105 (collision in 1996).

New engines having arrived Daban from Mudanjiang works, newly repaired, but not yet in use:

6981 , 6844 , 6986 , (early Nov 2000)

Daban has some new personnel under training, for steam locomotives. It does not seem this is in order to increase the number of engines. There is some turnover in locomotive personnel. Some of the older locomotive people now work in other jobs in the depot.

  • More about engine QJ 6301, the Daban supershine freight engine
  • Ex Wuhu. Daban engine in supershine condition with railings and slogans since May 1997.

On the front plate is the name "qingnian wenming hao", strictly "youth culture". "Youth Culture" was the name of a prize i.e. the Youth Culture Prize, awarded to various people or groups. "QingNian" was the name of a magazine MaoZeDong published articles in during the early years of the 20th century. The engine was thus named on May 4, 1997.

A picture taken by HeLiWen of Daban depot in September 1997 shows the engine in "normal" condition, presumably ex works, but without slogans, railings and brass bands. Varying slogans during the time. Locomotive was on Daban - Haoluku section in Dec 1997 through at least Feb 1999, later on Daban - Chabuga section.

In Feb 2001 new red band round smokebox door. On the RHS of the smokebox front (LHS as you look at it), it says "safety and punctuality" (anquan zhengdian). On the other side, "hao" is good, "Xianxing" means in front or to go in advance/be in the lead. It could mean "take the lead" or more loosely "set a good example" (in safety etc). Another interpretation is this: "Xianxing" here means the locomotive, because it is in front of the train. So this would translate as "be a good locomotive" or "a good locomotive".

Well, as I understood the locomotive crews, they consider themselves as crews which are very good in safety and general perfomance. Maybe punctuality is the right word for what I translated as general "performance".

However, this slogan was not supported by all the three crews, and in November 2001 there was a new slogan at the smokebox door.

This engine had a stoker, working after a major repair at Sujiatun in July 2001. The crews were very picky about cleaning the engine in Nov 2001 and throughout 2002. They loved the engine looking good. Showing them some of my pictures, they did not like them, because the locomotive was not clean enough! This time they first cleaned their engine before allowing me to take photos of it...

The new slogan on smoke box door in Nov 2001 was chosen by the crews: "Pinbo Gong Xian Fazhan Jitong". "Work hard to pay tribute to offer (suggestions to) develop Jitong (railway)".

In October 2002, still showing slogans, but the locomotive looked dirty and was in a technically bad shape. No working stoker. They had to use high cutoff in upgrades.

Several crew members from this engine have had fast advances in their careers: Locomotive driver in 1999 was Jin Bao Shan. In 2002 he was appointed brigade leader. In 2001 to 2001, one of the drivers was Wang Wei, in 2003 he was brigade leader.

The engine was sent to Tonghua for intermediate repair (jiaxiu) with locomotive driver Yang Shi Ku on 23 February 2003. Due to technically bad state it was not repaired, returned to Daban and dumped there. Still in store in Dec 2003, ribbed of all brass plates. Probably cut up in August 2004. Its frontplate is stored in the Daban museum.

  • <>Supershine engine ex Baotou Xi. Passenger engine between Daban and Chabuga, at least from 1998, until 16. August 2005. The engine got named "baoyang biaobing", 保养标兵, on its frontplate, on on Dec 9, 1997; something like "maintain being a good example". Railings along running plate, changing slogans on smoke deflectors. The engine got new slogans in Oct 2000. Locomotive crews were very young, probably a "youth engine". In September 2001 a ring around the smokebox was added. Here is a picture of its state in November 2001.

On the smoke deflectors there is the slogan "Yun Shu Anquan Chang Tong", "Safe and smooth transportation", and on the front of the smokebox a slogan containing the words "...shi .. Jitong". Back from major overhaul 24 March 2005, in use on passenger trains 6051/2 between Daban and Chabuga afterwards, until retired on August 16, 2005, in immaculate technical and optical condition (picture). Retirement because of timeout for repair in workshop. The locomotive was immediately robbed of all the brass inscriptions.

After the demise of steam, this engine was fixed up, equipped with new brass numbers, slogans and depot plates as well as the front plate of 6301 and plinted besides the depot administration building togehter with steam crane 5203.
