INVITATION TO CONFERENCE

Belonging & Boundaries; the role & re-writing of Romani History

This conference is in conjunction with the Romany exhibition in Malmö Museum in November.
The purpose is to discuss Romany history, how it has been presented and in what ways
traditional and recent scholarship differ. Other central topics will be how theories of Romany
history have affected – and continue to affect – our understanding of the Romany, relations
between Gypsies themselves and between Gypsies and wider society.
An important and related topic is how to display different interpretations of origins to ensure
that they are fairly represented in the Romany museum.
The conference speakers, from both Romany and non-Romany backgrounds, are representatives
and academics from Sweden, England and the U.S.A. Participants will be encouraged to take part
in the round table discussion in the afternoon.
