Kraftwerk saw themselves more like studio technicians rather than musicians in a traditional manner. The referred to the studio as a laboratory and denied the whole idea of individual artistry and star-status.  They even used amazingly realistic dummies in photo-sessions, so that they could continue their work undisturbed. (The dolls where also used under the premier of Man Machine in New York and Paris in 1978).
Kraftwerk also saw themselves more as spokesmen of the new era, rather than creative artists.: "It's really not we who make the music, because it's not me in person, or Karl or Florian or Wolfgang" said Ralf to Melody Maker in 1981. "It just comes through us. Its a result of science. I think it's more a matter of scientific attitude".
