Last Update: September 2000. Schedule Webmaster; Tor Steven Gilb, Email: HeadOffice@Result-Planning.com
Year 2000
25-29 September 2000, Yokohama Japan, Second World congress Software Quality: www.juse.or.jp/e-renmei/2WCSQMAIN.html
Keynote: "The Ten Most Powerful Principles for Quality in (Software and) Software Organizations", Half-Day Tutorial: "Advanced Software Inspection Technology: Measurement, process controll & continuous improvement, not just 'cleanup'." Contact: Juse@al.mbn.or.jp
9-12 October 2000 (Four Days), , London, England, by Tom Gilb.
Venue: New Connaught Rooms, Covent Garden, London.
Price: £995 per participant. Group Discount of 25% for each subsequent
participant. Price includes a paper copy of the course slides and a copy of
the book 'Software Inspection' written by Tom with Dorothy Graham. Price
also includes lunches.
The Course is presented by Tom Gilb. It consists of mainly of lectures, but
also includes workshops. Course material follows the Inspection process
with an emphasis on planning Inspections and the economics of Inspection.
After attending the course, a participant should be able to assess the
benefits of Inspection to their organisation and, should be able to set up
and run an Inspection. The course is suitable for project managers, quality
managers and systems engineers. The course is applicable whether you are
looking to start up Inspection or to regenerate an existing Inspection
process.
Inspection is peer review of any technical written document that must
conform to quality standards. Tom's version of Inspection updates the
original version as invented by Michael Fagan within IBM in the 1970s. It
includes later additions such as the Defect Prevention Process (a subset of
Continuous Process Improvement).
Tom has taught Inspection over numerous years both in-house and on public
courses. Both Hewlett-Packard and Ericsson have publicly documented the
benefits of Inspection as taught by Tom. Tom is an acknowledged expert on
Inspection and has a tremendous depth of practical knowledge about the
subject.

Venue: Covent Garden, London
Price: £100 per participant, but free to attendees of the Inspection Team
Leader Course earlier in the week.
Tom Gilb termed the phrase 'Software Metrics' and his work was the
inspiration for the SEI's Capability Maturity Model (CMM) Level 4 -
Measurement. This one day course is a chance to hear Tom's views on how
Requirements can be made quantifiable and, the benefits of doing so in
terms of evaluating designs and assessing project success or failure.

PAST Public Conferences and Courses:
Year 2000
31. Jan. - 1. Feb. 2000: Systems Engineering Seminarserie, Del 2 Kravspesifisering, INCOSE Oslo, Tom Gilb.
(This course will be held in Norwegian at Hotel Radisson Lysaker, Oslo-Norway)
Tema : Kravspesifikasjoner på systemnivå:
Hvordan man fastslår krav, spesifiserer krav, kontrollerer kravspesifikasjonskvalitet.
Oversikt over Grunnidéene på kurset:

14 June 2000, Washington DC, USA, Invitation to Free public seminar by Tom Gilb on Quantifying the Qualitative
Time: Wednesday, June 14, 9am - 4pm
Location: George Mason University, Student Union Building (SUB) II Ballroom
on campus (directions below). Washigton Metro Area Chapter will sponser this
seminar
Dave Suh at Fannie Mae and George Mason University's Program on Social and
Organizational Learning (PSOL) will be hosting a free seminar/tutorial by
Tom Gilb on "Quantifying the Qualitative - A Strategic Thinking and
Measurement Methodology using Planguage."
Organizations are struggling with making a transition from their focus on
traditional measures of performance to other, less tangible but - in today's
organizations - increasingly significant factors which have a bearing on the
effectiveness of organizations.
Tom Gilb is from Norway and has a structured process and a crisp language
for measuring the difference you are making in organizational
change/transformation efforts. The seminar on "Quantifying the Qualitative -
A Strategic Thinking and Measurement Methodology using Planguage" will
explain the method that you can apply to your engagement with your clients
and organizations.
'Planguage' is a practical tool for management and engineering planning and
decision making. It is probably the world's first attempt at a
comprehensive, formal but flexible, planning language which includes
multiple quantified stakeholder values and qualities as well as costs.
Anyone can download the manuscript defining it (Competitive Engineering,
www.result-planning.com), but you can also come along and hear the author
explain and exemplify it. This is a mould-breaking way to manage complex,
large and fast-changing technical and organizational problems.
Tom Gilb shares his intellectual material generously. There is no cost
involved and you are all cordially invited to attend. Please let Heather
Isaac know (psolsec@som.gmu.edu) if you are planning to attend. You can come
at the last minute. I understand how we live very busy lives with changing
schedules.
You can download the slides for free at: http://www.software.org/dcspin
Feel free to invite all your colleagues who could benefit from a tool for
clear thinking.
To reach George Mason University at the Fairfax Campus from the southern
part of the Capital Beltway Route 495 take exit 5, Braddock Road West, Route
