Around Sognefjord

Across Sognefjell

[Pic: Otta river near Lom]
Driving along the Otta River towards Lom. I'm just checking the temperature in the river. Notice how clear the water is.

[Pic: Bøver Valley near Lom]
Driving from Lom towards the Sognefjell, a mountain crossing en route to Sognefjord. The valley is called Bøver Valley and contains a lot of well preserved old farms, almost like a gigantic outdoor museum. There are several old and traditional hotels here worth a visit.

[Pic: Sognefjell-Smørstab Glacier]
This is the Smørstab Glacier (to the right). We are near Krossbu, a mountain hut where you can stay for a night or two. It is possible to cross the glacier between Leirvassbu and Krossbu. Don't ever go alone, though, always use a guide.

[Pic: Sognefjell Road]
We are close to the highest point along the road, looking backwards towards the Smørstab Glacier again. Notice the poles along the road.

[Pic: Snow along the road]

Even in early June you may encounter large snow walls along the road. You must hurry if you want to see this, the best season is late May. This wall is 4.5 meters high. The poles you see are approx. 8 meters high. Do you know what these poles are used for? No? Okey, I'll give you a hint. After a winter snowstorm several meters of snow may have filled the road. To open the road again, these poles show where the road is.

Next: Sognefjord and Urnes
