Invincible is executive produced by Michael
Jackson, and is his first studio album since 1995.
On the album Michael has collaboration with a
wide range of producers and artists, from Rodney
Jerkins and Teddy Riley to Santana and Chris Tucker.
The
album contains eight ballads, one of which is
co-produced by R. Kelly; the strong and passionate
song called Cry. Another ballad, Speechless, opens
with an acapella intro and uses a full orchestra,
and is described by Bruce Swedien as 'gorgeous'
and 'to die for'. There are also several uptempo,
dance tracks on the album, such as Michael's favourite
song Unbreakable and the electric club song 2000
Watts.
The
first song released off the album was You Rock
My World. The
song is written and composed by Michael Jackson
and Rodney Jerkins, and co-written by Fred Jerkins
III, LaShawn Daniels and Nora Payne. The song
features lead and background vocals by Michael
Jackson, and opens with a spoken dialogue by Michael
Jackson and comedian Chris Tucker. All musical
instruments are performed by Jackson and Jerkins.
You
Rock My World debuted on WJTM-FM on Friday August
17th. The release of the song was originally scheduled
for early September, but because the song leaked
to American radio stations (and following that
spread around the world through the Internet),
Epic decided to advance the release of the single
to radios to October 8th.
Invincible
was released internationally on October 29th (30th
in the USA and Canada) 2001. As well as the original
grey CD cover (see picture above), the album also
came in 4 additional colours - green, blue, red
and yellow - released only in a limited number.
Michael explained in a live audio chat online
on October 28th that this was done because they
wanted the fans to have some fun the albums and
collect the different colours.
All around the world record shops held open on
the night before the album release, and fans gathered
outside to buy Invincible the minute it was put
out for sale at midnight. Four days after the
release of Invincible fanclubs could report that
the album had already sold more than 3 million
copies worldwide - which is huge even for a Michael
Jackson album - and in France, Switzerland, Norway,
Italy and Spain Invincible had broken Michael's
previous records and become his fastest-selling
album ever.
A
week after the release of the album, fans learnt
that Invincible had officially gone to number
one in UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Norway
and Australia.
