The church in Oconee st.
| So this is all that's left
of the old St. Mary's Episcopal church in Oconee street.
The legends says that there is gold hidden in the church
tower.... There was actually rooms built inside the church, and quite a few people lived here. Peter and Michael moved in here, and Bill was soon to follow (and then lend out his couch to Mike) so it was perhaps natural that this was the place where they would eventually play their first gig. It happened at Kathleen O'Brien's birthday party, at April 5th 1980. On that evening the Side effects and Men in trees opened for Twisted kites, later known as R.E.M. |

| I have no idea where this spooky shadow came from. It looks a bit nice, though. | |
| Can't see the parking lot from this angle. | |
| "Look up, what do you see..." | |
| This is going to be a music centre. It is being built in memory of a young musician who committed suicide here. | |
| This is my friend Paul, who took me on a sightseeing in Athens. He played drums in the Side effects, who opened for R.E.M. in the church in 1980! Paul knows every building and place in Athens, and he knows all the stories worth knowing... |
