Travel I've been lucky to have a job that has taken me a bit around the world.
Maybe not to the most exotic places, but of the northern hemisphere I have seen
quite a lot. The southern one has unfortunately so far been out of my reach,
although there have been occasions when I have been quite close to this 40,000
km long imaginary line that we call the Equator. Package tours to Greek and Spanish islands are absolutely OK as such, and
I have had my share of this travel culture as well. Best of all I remember
Rhodes in 1971; mass tourism had not yet invaded the island, and at Faliraki
Beach there was at the time not a single hotel. Only a white and blue shack from
which a Greek family served ouzo, rezina, beer of the brand Fix, calamari,
scampi and the most delicious village salad. The Greek culture was still visible
and accessible, even though the generals and their junta ruled the country with
an iron hand. The relaxed Greek hospitality is something I remember with
pleasure. Returning to Rhodes 7 - 8 years later was an anticlimax. Travelling as part of one's profession usually doesn't leave much time or
opportunity for the great sights or the paramount experiences. Airports, hotels
and meeting rooms are as a rule the most common scenarios. But occasionally
there may be an opportunity to get a bit of time off, and on such occasions it
is definitely not the hotels, office buildings or the meeting rooms that carry
the biggest attraction.
