My Family
We met in the spring and married in the autumn of 1964, Synnøve and I.
She was a farmer's daughter from the township of Lensvika, and at the time we
met she was an art student in Trondheim. I was in my very first job - as an
assistent clerical officer with a government official in Trondheim. My monthly
income before taxes according to the State's salary scale step # 6 was at the
time NOK 991.00, or US $ 124.50 converted at the 1964 exchange rate. Not much to
live by for a young family, even if there were only the two of us, so we left
Trondheim shortly after we were married and went to the small town of Bodø up north where a new job as well
as a flat was waiting for us. The annual salary was the staggering sum of 20,000
shining Norwegian kroner, and the rent for a modern flat with a sitting-room, a
bedroom, kitchen and a bathroom was lower than what I had paid for a bedsitter
in Trondheim. The future looked great. But there was a career to be made, which meant moving somewhere else.
After 4 years in Bødo we left this beautiful place on the rather rough coast of
northern Norway, and set up a new camp in the small town of Hamar centrally
located in southern Norway. After another 4 years we decided to move back to Trøndelag
County, and bought ourselves a house in the mining town of Røros up in the
mountains approximately 100 miles south of Trondheim. Røros is known as an
eldorado for nature lovers, hunters and anglers, but also for its extremely cold
winters. After fighting 9 of those cold winters we moved to Stjørdal in 1981,
where we bought ourselves a house in Hegra. And here we still are, after 21
years. I guess we have finally settled down. Along the road our kids were born. We had a son on 11 July 1965, who
lived only till the next day. Something went wrong at the hospital, but we never
learned what really happened. A difficult time followed. But then Ellen Marie was
born in 1967 (we were still living in Bodø), and Karl Fredrik came in 1970. He
was born in Hamar. And here are a few pictures of us, taken during the last 60-odd years.
