IARU Region1 General Conference 1999

| The
situation today The structure of the organisation has been nearly unchanged since 1953. Many specialised committees/working groups has been established with the passage of the years, and the contact with the IARU has been closer due to a new Constitution and bye-laws for this organisation. For many years IARU Region 1 was represented at ITU's World Administrative Radio Conferences (WARC), and occasionally at ITU special conferences, e.g. for the satellite service. The WARC in 1959 was relatively successful having Atlantic City in mind. The 1979 WARC was a great success. Here the "WARC-bands" were born, and the basis for the later radio amateur use of a shared 50 MHz-band was formed. However, some years ago ITU was reorganised. In this connection the large WARCs arranged with intervals from 15 to 20 years were replaced by smaller World Radio Conferences (WRC) every two years. Of course this places a much heavier work load on the shoulders of the organisation's officers than before. In addition, other international telecommunications bodies like the CEPT and some EU-institutions have become more important to the radio amateurs, making it necessary to follow them up more closely. In 1988 there are 86 member societies in IARU Region 1. (The word "Division" in the name was abolished some years ago in connection with the adoption of a new Constitution and Bye-Laws replacing the former rules). In the Constitution we find
