San Francisco

If you ever have been to San Francisco, you will know why the song goes like this: "I left my heart in San Francisco".

A lot of American TV series and movies are shot in this city, so it seems familiar even though your never been there before. I've been here several times (lucky me), but Hilde was here for the very first time in November 99. The city is multi-cultural melting pot and there are restaurants and shops from all over the world. Neighborhoods named Chinatown, Little Italy and Japan Town indicates where the people here descend from. The city's largest and most impressing landmark is one of the worlds most famous bridges, the Golden Gate.

Golden Gate in clear weather

Golden Gate is being maintained all year round, some 20,000 liters of paint, color "International Orange". is being used. On the picture the city can be seen clearly, but it is often hidden in the misty fog.

Golden Gate in the misty fog

Alcatraz

The notorious misty fog rolls in quickly and covers the bridge. Within minutes the weather changes from clear to foggy - and vice versa.

The waters around the Golden Gate consist of freezing water and strong maelstroms. The building used to be one of the most famous prisons in the world, the Alcatraz.

Steep hills

Hilde on the outside

The hills are many, and they are steep! The Cable Cars are therefore excellent for transporting tired tourists and inhabitants. The speed down the hills can be up to... well, really really fast! Better then to try while we are standing still.

In San Francisco there are many popular attractions like Chinatown, Coit Tower, Lombard Street and the   Victorian Houses. Read more about these at the pages about Tourist attractions

Seals of Pier 39

The seals are having a ball in their spot at Pier 39.

Pier 39 is situated at Fisherman's Wharf and it is always crowded with tourists from all over the world, but it is a nice area for a walk and shopping of (un)necessary presents.

If you are looking for lunch or just a hot snack, the sell fresh fish and shellfish in the streets and in the restaurants in the area. Clamchowder in Sourdough is a must. It's a thick creamy shellfish soup served in a hollow Sourdough (special San Francisco bread)

The famous chocolate factory, Ghirardelli has a candy store a couple of blocks away and they sell very good chocolate. In the old Cannery there is a bar for beer lovers, they serve 110 different brands of draught beer. If you can't find a beer you like here you are very fastidious.
