The fm portion right at the top of the 10 mtr band from 29550 to 29700 is the highest frequency permitted for amateur use in the HF bands.
The definition of 30 mhz as the border between HF and VHF is artificial and as such 10 mtr FM can offer many suprises,
As with VHF a high transmitting effect is unnecessary when conditions are favourable.
At solar maxima worldwide contacts can be made both by short and long paths.
During the summer months from May to September, the main mode of propagation here in southern NORWAY is sporadic E,
Often a call on a seemingly dead band will bring suprising results.
Good contacts can be obtained by using very simple wire antennas during these E conditions.Though polarity change due to movement in the reflective layer can be somewhat pronounced.
Polarity changes can be noted as very deep fading(qsb).
During the sporadic season, all of Europe can be contacted on 10FM,often with the effect under 1 watt.
Sporadic E contacts are often very localised with a 59 + signal barely readable just a few kilometeres away.
The 10FM portion of the band is from 29550-29700,and has been channelised, not by the IARU but by its users.
The normal channels for simplex contacts are in 20khz steps from the calling channel of 29600. A number of repeaters are also active on 10 fm as well as countless remote base stations.
