GRIFTERS
Ain't My Lookout LP Sub-Pop |
|
One of the first things you'll notice about
this record is that the vocal tracks have been given a new lease on life. Clear.
Urgent. Vibrating with troubadour grace - a Memphisation of historic
proportions. The songs here are more "polished" (it's safe to say they
ain't using a 4-track no more) but still contain the same trepidation as the
ghosts of records past. Spray gun rhythms, and rev'd up pop songs were present
on other records (see '94s smash summer hit "Bronze Cast" from "Crappin
You Negative") but only really hinted at. These wax trax, are nothing but a
non-stop indie rock rollercoaster ride thru grifteresque graffti splattered
alleyways and clinical landfills - led by four hungry musicians bound for glory
and stopping only for coffee and cigarettes.

GRIFTERS
Crappin' You Negative LP Shangri-La |
|
The Grifters make blues for people who hate blues. Memphis, skronky-blues, smoothed
out on the lo-fi tip, that is. This is their third full-length and fortunately isn't
really more refined than previous efforts. One song was recorded in a parking
garage...The Grifters are the New Kings of Rock and Roll...
