"A Different Beat" is the brand new album by Gary Moore. On the Raw Power label (a division of Castle Music), it will be reieased on Monday, September 27th.
"A Different Beat" is Gary's first album since departing from the Virgin label and it features Gary's instantly recognisable guitar style in an intriguing and unusual set of rhythmic frameworks - hence the album title. Never a musician to shirk a challenge or take chances with his music, on "A Different Beat" Moore utilises drum loops and programmed rhythms as a pad for some of his most incisive guitar work of recent years. In an album that consistently surprises, entertains and energises, Gary proves that he has lost none of his musical open-mindedness and a willingness to embrace new sounds and styles. That's not to say that on "A Different Beat" Gary has abandoned the hard rock format upon which his reputation is founded. A cursory listen to his version of Jimi Hendrix' "Fire" rocks as toughly as any other act you could name, and on the bluesy "Surrender", Gary once more utilises those bluesy musical chops that characterised his early 90's work. lndeed, "Surrender" may be one of his finest forays in the genre, where Moore's vocal bleeds blues juice into the song's musical grain, his solo a model of soulful economy and achingly blueswailing.
lt's on tracks such as "Bring My Baby Back", where Moore meshes a country blues stomp with a rhythm programme which motors along as purposefully as an express train that "A Different Beat" displays a different facet of his musical talent. Whilst the vocal and guitar playing is inimitable, when meshed with the song's rhythm track it becomes something else indeed. Elsewhere, "Houseful of Blues" marries a conventionally blues-based lyric to another robust rhythm track and some gutsy Gary Moore lead guitar. Most striking of all is "Fatboy", Gary's funky, amusing musical appreciation of Mr Norman Cooke, AKA Fatboy Slim. Gary's been a Fatboy fan for several years now, having got into the Fatboy phenomenon some time back. He's clearly enjoying this distinctive new canvas for his six-string artistry. "A Different Beat", indeed.
Gary Moore will tour the UK and Europe in Autumn 1999 to promote "A
Different Beat".
