Gary's new album is produced by Gary Moore and Chris Tsangerides, and it will be released in April '97 confirmed by Gary's Management. A track to be featured at the album is called 'I Have Found My Love In You' written in 1995 by Gary Moore alone. This is verified by Gary's Management. This track has only been heard by Virgin officials, but then in demo version. Gary's Management told me that the version to be featured at the album will be different. (Wish I could hear the demo version as well:), but who knows.....)
The poem book 'Songs For While I'm Away' by Phil Lynott is rescheduled to be released in December '96 and it's published by Boxtree.
A new Thin Lizzy biography 'The Ballad of the Thin Man' released by Boxtree has been delayed to December '96 for release.

2. COLLECTORS NEWS

By Lennart, Tomoyuki and Ole-Johan
Tomo Yamazaki has interviewed Keith
Emerson during his visit to Japan as a part of the Emerson Lake & Palmer
world tour. As you might be aware of, Gary Moore played on one track
"Captain Starship Christmas" on his _KEITH EMERSON CHRISTMAS ALBUM_, which
mysteriously disappeared when it was re-released last year.
The interview will be featured in
the _THE HO-NO-O_ magazine (in Japanese language), but here is the
bit about Gary for your reading pleasure:
Keith:"Gary played on one track... I just needed a drummer and a guitarist, really. I asked the engineer who we could get, and he said "get Gary Moore, he's good", and that's it. (On the supergroup rumour) Jack Bruce and I did work out some things together - we had a rehearsal - I forgot who the guitarist was. Simon Philips was considered as the drummer, but it didn't work out. The guitarist was the guy who used to be with Genesis... (Steve Hackett?) Yes, he's the one. I never considered a group with Gary. I mean, I wouldn't mind, but...Captain Starship was removed because it just didn't seem to fit in. I didn't like the arrangement. Simple as that."
'PETER & THE WOLF' got re-released on Zok Records with a cat.number ZCDPW011 in Japan, with a different sleeve. Nothing special, one of these cheap reissues.
There are no plans to release the 'Blues For Greeny Live' video in the US yet.
Good Friend of the GAZ editors, Stefan Knispel from Germany, has sent us tape with Jack Bruce. The tape included part of a Jack Bruce concert from La Cartua Auditorium, Sevilla, Spain 17. Oct 1991, with Phil Mansenera - Guitar, Chris Stainton - Keyboard, Ray Cooper - Percussion, Simon Philips - Drums and was broadcasted on the German Radio, featuring 'City Of Gold'. This early version of BBM song was not so different, it was with less and different guitar. This is not the only 'leftover' on the BBM album. Also the Gary Moore written 'Wrong Side Of Town' is a leftover from 'After Hours' album

Ole-Johan,
Hi, Iv'e got an idea for a story.. How about finding out what equipment Gary has used over the years? The last thing I read about him was that he was using the old Marshall 200 watt Major amp for his next album. I believe these were originally created for Ritchie Blackmore. I would like to hear more about Gary's equipment, past and present. My favorite Moore albums are as follows.
Hard Rock/Metal.
1. Victims of the Future
2. Wild Frontier
3. Run For Cover
Blues.
1. Still got the blues. (I wish
he would make another record of all (or mostly) original blues material
like that. It was a killer. The U.S. really has no concept
of how great a musician Gary is. That record truly displayed Gary's ability
and diversity. I love Eddie Van Halen but besides him no other hard
rock/blues musician gets any decent press.
2. After Hours. Not as good
as No.1 but not bad.
3. Live Blues, not a bad record but
I thought Gary overplayed a little on it. The video of it was okay.
Gary seems nervous and tends to make mistakes when he first starts a show,
then settles down and sounds better. B.B. King didn't really seem
interested in being there at the show. Maybe he was put off by Gary
picking Albert King/Collins as his mentors on Still Got The Blues/etc..
My favorite Gary Blues tune: All your lovin'. A cover but better than SRV's version in my opinion. Much Better.
Just my opinion. JS

Subject: GAZ: Wild One CD
Here's a brief review of the recent:
_Wild One (The Very Best of Thin Lizzy)_
This is a Japanese 2CD on the Vertigo label. A similar single CD was released in Europe. (This album probably won't be released in the USA). It contains 5 songs featuring Gary Moore (marked "*" below).
The Boys Are Back In Town
Jailbreak
Don't Believe A Word
*Waiting For An Alibi
Rosalie/Cowgirl Song (live)
Cold Sweat
Thunder and Lightning
*Out In the Fields
Dancing In The Moonlight
*Parisienne Walkways
*(My) Sarah
Still In Love With You (live)
Emerald
Bad Reputation
Killer On The Loose
China Town
*Do Anything You Want To
The Rocker (single version)
Whiskey In The Jar
This is called a "Thin Lizzy" best of, but two of the songs are actually from Gary Moore albums with Phil Lynott helping out.
The Japanese version come with a live bonus CD consisting of 9 songs (none with Gary) recorded live in 1977 and 1980. All are sourced from vinyl singles/EPs.
The album claims to have used the recently remastered versions of the songs. And I believe it. However, many (if not most) of these songs sound *TERRIBLE*! The sound quality of the original CDs was often terrible as well (examples later), but this is even worse! These songs have the defects present in the old CDs plus some new ones. (The live bonus CD is sourced from vinyl and apart from some occasional minor surface noise and clicks, it sounds OK).
The worst sounding song is "Waiting For An Alibi". The terrible static that ruined the original CD is again here (0:06 - 0:20). Apparently it's on the source reel used for both CDs. Incredible. If this is what they had to work with, they should either have looked for another source tape (the master or safety reel, which ever they didn't use) or go back to the multitrack tapes and remix it. Or, as a final resort, source from an old LP.
"Out In the Fields", this may be the same (ie not remastered) as on Gary's _Run For Cover_ Euro CD (with Out Of My System bonus track). The same harsh sound overall, and the same defects, such as the static at 3:03 - 3:04.
"Parisienne Walkways", also sounds the same as on Gary's _Back On the Street_ CD. A bit hissy, but otherwise OK.
"(My) Sarah". Sounds a bit clearer than on the old _Black Rose_ Euro CD, but it still has all the same defects (eg saturation/breakup at 0:05, 0:13, and 0:15).
"Do Anything You Want To Do", this also sounds a bit clearer than on _Black Rose". This is one of the few songs on this CD that has no serious defects. It sounds a bit harsh but not bad.
As for the other (non-Moore related) songs, the also vary in quality, from the OK to the terrible. The _Jailbreak_ songs are inferior to the CD versions on the old US CD. For example, "The Boys Are Back In Town" has new breakup/crackles at 1:09, 1:14, 1:16. "Emerald" has new pops at 0:08, 0:14, 0:16 and static at 0:02, plus print-thru of the first line (Down from the glen) during the openning. The last two songs with Eric Bell are also steps backwards, being inferior to the older CD versions...these remasters stuffer from breakup/saturation problems. The Snowy White and John Sykes eras material are also generally not improvements. In short, the remasters are worthless, and this CD is not recommended.
On a lighter note, as usual the Japanese CD comes with lyrics. And, also as usual, they are not always accurate. Here are a few of the more amusing mis-heard lyrics...
"Jailbreak"
If you see us coming
I think it's best
you move away
Do you hear what I say?
*Depend on* my breath
[from under my breath]
"Waiting For An Alibi"
Smokes another cigarette
*That's what* helps
[Says it helps]
him to forget
He's *really up the schmeck*
[He's a nervous wreck]
"Cold Sweat"
Stone cold *summer*
[Stone cold sober]
stone cold sweat
running down the back
of my neck
To lose *me someone*
[To lose means trouble]
To *them it means* double
[To win brings double]
And I got be me a heavy
*belt* [And I got me a heavy bet]
I got a *hold on twinges*
[I got a whole month's wages]
I haven't seen
that *what you need just*
[that much in ages]
"Thunder and Lightning" is funny too, but I'll stop here.
Scott.

GAZ Editor Comment:
By Tomoyuki
I want to add that the lyrics for
the remastered CDs of _JAILBREAK_, JOHNNY THE FOX_, _ BAD REPUTATION_,
_LIVE & DANGEROUS_ and _BLACK ROSE_ have been corrected. I have
been involved in the reissue programme myself so I made sure that the things
were accurate as possible. Incidentally yours truly wrote the liner
notes and translated the lyrics as well. _THUNDER AND LIGHTNING_ was reissued
recently on midprice, but since I was not involved, the lyrics are still
shoddy. Don't blame me, they didn't ever tell me it was going to
be reissued!

Hi,
Here is some news courtesy of George Bartolo of Toronto.
"the album is due out in March 1997. Its been recorded in London, south of France,Capri, and mixed in Miami... Chris T. is producing half of the album and someone else is doing the other half... its taking awhile to get the album together because Gary is still writing songs. Plans are in the works to heavily promote the album all over the globe, via tv radio and magazines in April/ March 97. Based on recent history with album releases and scheduling , who knows maybe non of this will come to pass.."
I John, and George have e-mailed MuchMusic here in Toronto to feature Gary Moore in their spotlight program. I did this in May of this year. All I have received to this date is the acknowledgement of our request and thats it. Could you please post a request to all your web site attendees to also e-mail MuchMusic and make the same request. Have any such request been made with VH1 or MTV?
Thanks John

FEATURE: JOHN SLOMAN WITH GARY
MOORE
------------------------------------
Hi all, Lulea, November 1996
In a previous issue someone asked about the singer John Sloman. Sloman has been in bands like Lone Star and Uriah Heep besides his short stint in Gary's band. In the early 80s it seemed Gary was always on the look-out for a new singer but for various reasons they did not last long. At the time Neil Murray was playing bass with Gary. Sometime prior to joining Gary's band Murray had been working with John Sykes and Sloman in a band called Badlands, not to be confused with the American band led by ex-Ozzie guitarist Jake E. Lee. They had recorded a demo but they never recorded any album. John Sykes later joined Thin Lizzy. Murray is supposed to have played the demo for Gary and John Sloman was consequently asked to join the band.
I have seen Gary saying in interviews the best solution was if he could find a singer that also played an instrument so that the singer would have something useful to do during the long instrumental sections of the live shows. So Sloman who also played keyboards also got to play them during the live shows. Of course Don Airey was the real keyboardist at this time and when he's in any band there is really no need for a second keyboard player! :) Sloman is a singer with a voice that can be labelled as somewhat of a required taste but I really find him to be a great pop singer. In the context of Gary's music though he became too much of a screecher and not having required power the higher range it was not long before he was out of the band. He could be seen on a live broabcast from the German TV show Rockpalast and can also be heard on the "Rockin' Every Night - Live in Japan" album as well as doing backing vocals on the single mix of "Falling In Love With You".
A really interesting thing from this period is the solo album that Sloman was working on while in Gary's band. I did not know about it until many years later when i stumbled on a guy with a tape copy of some Sloman demos he stated had Gary Moore playing on them. I knew of the Badlands demos and that was what I thought he had but he had so many more songs so I became curious. After listening through the tape there was no doubt in my mind it really is Gary on some of these songs. I had a vague memory of hearing about a Sloman solo album that had been released sometime during the 80s so was Gary perhaps on that LP? No, he was not. A few tracks off the Badlands demo and the demo with Gary had made it to the album but they were re-recorded versions with other musicians. The album has been released more than once and with different titles. My copy of the CD International "CD World Reference Guide 91/92" lists a CD release and personally I own a LP with a different title.
CD: Perfect Stranger
UK - FM/Revolver - WKFMXD 114
- 1986?
LP: Disappearances Can Be Deceptive
...
W. GER - FM/Revolver - WKFM
LP 114 - 1989
Note: These albums are the same and does *not* feature Gary Moore.
So what was on the demos then? Here are the track listing:
1. Laughing In Your Face
2. Guilty
3. Save Us
4. I'm Lost Without Your love
5. Hooked On A Dream
6. Jealous Eyes
7. Guilty
8. She Talks About You
9. In Too Deep
10. Love Remember Me
11. You Took The Love
12. Inside Out
1-4 is the Badlands demo. 5-12 is the demo where Gary Moore supposedly contributes to tracks 5-7, 9 and 12. 3, 5, 6, 8 and 9 made it to the album although as mentioned above in re-recorded versions (*without* Moore). The Bandlands demos (1-4) can be found on the John Sykes bootleg "Blonde And Dangerous".
The tracks that Gary plays on are all very much pop or lighter rock and I quite like them. They are all classy and mostly keyboard driven. It is obvious that Sloman was so much more relaxed singing this kind of music. Gary turns in some fine guitar solos and these are quite inspired compared to some of the sessions Gary did in the 80s. No reason to go into detail on the individual tracks here as they can't be found anywhere except among tape traders. The quality of the existing tapes are pretty good though. The only thing I really can complain about when it comes to the copy I have heard is some tape hiss.
Good luck finding it!
