From: Ole-Johan Backman - The Editor
Subject: Run For Cover - The album
without?
What can you say about this album,
lots of producers, couple of 'hit'
singles, a mean break-up, a magic
friend back and new sales record of GM
albums! It sounds like a mess and
nearly became it.
For me 'Run For Cover' has highlights
and weak parts, not so complete as the
previous albums. It's of course due
to the use of 5 producers including Gary
himself, with all different view of
music styles. It's not my obvious choice
for a GM album to put in my CD-player,
but still okay!
'Run For Cover' the title track of
the album, sounds to me like a rip off
Gary's 'Run To You Mama' from Dirty
Fingers album. Just speeding up the
song, same type of theme in the lyrics
and the guitarsolo section is written
close as in 'Run To Your Mama', except
for the keyboard is answering the
guitar in 'Run For Cover'. I do prefer
the 'Run to Your Mama', compared to
'Run For Cover'.
'Reach For The Sky' for me Glenn Hughes'
fine voice doesn't fit to the rest
of the song. The songs sounds best
without any vocal parts, also the backing
vocals.
'Military Man' The best song on the
album!!!! Great written song by Phil and
good production by Gary. This song
got everything, good mix between the
vocals and guitar, nice smooth middlesection.
Definte my favourite song from
the album, nice relaxed guitarsolo,
heavy riffs and ending with killer solo
by Gary. Live this song is even better!!!
'Empty Rooms' what can you say? A fine
Ballad, I like the '84 versions from
'Victims' or the live version from
'We Want Moore'.
'Out Of My System' the bonus track
featuring at CD and Tape. Fine vocal by
Glenn, and some fine guitars from
Gary. Very easy song to like, one of two
songs survived by the producer Beau
Hill, who loves keyboards in the rock music.
'Out In The Fields' A classic, good
guitar solos, great vocals and one of
the best written song by Gary up to
1985.
'Nothing To Lose' the second song produced
by Beau 'Keyboard' Hill, but Gary
let Mike Stone mix more guitar parts
of final result from Beau. This song is
still getting better everytime I hear
it! Good vocal and guitar from Glenn
and Gary.
'Once In The lifetime' a good song
by Gary, isn't it a bit ironic he used
Mike Stone and not Beau Hill. Mike
did a fine job. Fine guitar through the
song, this is one my highlight from
the album.
'All Messed Up' - This song has good
riffs and is perfect live hit as we
know. Although I prefer the live version,
wilder and better guitar solos. I
guess many of us would have liked
to see Gary and Glenn do this together live.
'Listen To My Heartbeat' - fine ballad
with different style of Gary. Use
little guitar before the solos, and
using classical guitar in rhythm parts
So what do you say!

Subject: Gary's Equipment
I am a guitarist, and have been
for approximately 35 years. I have been
reading GAZ for several months
and really enjoy it. Gary is my favorate
player, but what I am interested in
is his equipment, and how he gets
his fantastic tone. I know about
the Peter Green guitar, but what is
the rest of his equipment?

I have found following info in a guitar

Subject: Jimi Hendrix Tribute Movie
As I stated in GAZ Issue 1:
Gary should feature in a film called
'Searching For Jimi' with a Jimi
Hendrix song called 'The Wind Cries
Mary'. Gary is also talking about Jimi
and his influence he had on Gary.
It will most likely be released 1996, then
only on video.
Any of you got anymore info about this movie/video???

FEATURE: GRANNY's INTENTIONS
----------------------------
Hello all, Lulea, July 25 1996
Time for another look at one of Gary's
sessions. The one in question is one
of the more obscure session work he's
done, namely the album "Honest Injun"
by the band Granny's Intentions. The
Gary Moore Bible "The Bio-discography
1969-1994", compiled by Rene Aagaard
states that the band originally started
the work that would lead to this album,
and recorded three songs in a London
studio with Noel Bridgeman (Skid Row)
on drums and a guy by the name John
Hockedy on guitar. After that the
band is supposed to have split up. After
having been back to the native Ireland
they reformed and went back to London
to finish off the album but this time
with Gary Moore on guitar. Granny's
Intention existed between 1965-71
and grew into being a very famous band in
Ireland.
The album cover lists these guys as
the band members: Johnny Duhan (vocals),
Johnny Hockedy (guitar, mandolin),
John Ryan (piano, organ, harpsichord),
Pat Nash (drums), Pete Cummings (bass,
flutes, whistles). For some reason
Noel Bridgeman and Gary Moore are
only mentioned in the thanks list and the
fact that they play on the album and
to what extent can't be found anywhere
on the cover!
Track listing:
Side A: Maybe * We both need to know
* Good eye * Fifty
years on * Susan of the county * Rise then fall
Side B: With salty eyes/Dirty lies
* Fourthskin blues *
Nutmeg, bitter-sweet * I'm going * Heavy loaded
minds
According to the Bible Gary plays on
all tracks except "Maybe", "Nutmeg,
bitter-sweet" and "I'm going". All
tracks are written either by Duhan or
Ryan. According to the Bible the album
was released in October 1970. Earlier
that year a single was released titled
with the tracks "Take Me Back" and
the album track "Maybe". According
to Ole-Johan the former was the A-side,
which is kind of odd since it's not
on the album. That non-album track is
also supposed to feature Gary. My
copy of the album is pressed in 1969
although the jacket was printed in
1970?! Strange! So exactly when this
session was record is a little uncertain
to me but my guess is sometime in
late 1969 which means we get to hear
a 17 year old Gary Moore on this album!
In an interview for Record Collector
(#190, June '95) Gary said this about
the session: "That's the first album
I ever played on. They were from
Limerick, but were living in Dublin.
They asked me to come to London to
finish their album, which they were
recording in the Decca studio where the
Bluesbreakers album was taped. To
me, it was like, The Temple!". He also
went on to describe the music: "It
was kinda country rock. Band-influenced."
Worth mentioning is also that Gary
also later guested on singer Johnny
Duhan's self-titled album from
1982.
I hear you say "Enough of the train-spotting
info! What about the music?".
Well, it's a mixture of 60s pop, rock,
country (!) and folk with the
emphasis on the three first. I really
enjoy hearing the young Gary play. He
was not yet fully matured as a player
but by listening to this album there's
no doubt that anyone who heard this
at the time was impressed by his skills
and at such a young age. I will not
run through all individual tracks that
Gary plays on as I have done with
other sessions. Partly because of the fact
that he plays on almost the entire
album, and partly because he plays very
much for the song here although there
are several guitar solos. A few
personal fave moments on the album
are worth mentioning though. "Susan of
the county" with such a rare thing
as a country music sounding solo from
Gary. "With salty eyes/Dirty lies"
which starts off as a rocking boogie with
a great horn section. On this song
the singer really sounds a lot like Brush
Shiels (Skid Row) at times. Also notice
how they play around with the stereo
effect and they let the guitar solo
wander back and forth between the
channels. They probably thought it
was a really cool sound effect!! :)
Gary's got a great tone though and
it's a fine slow bluesy solo. "Heavy
loaded minds" is a up-tempo great
stomping rocker with almost hardrock
tendencies in the solo, with guitar
screams and all! :)
All in all, probably not a bad album
of it's time, but it's hard to
recommend this to a Gary fan other
than to those of you who like me are true
collectors and completists. I have
a bit of a problem with the singer Johnny
Duhan who has a howling and haunting
quality of his voice but a whole album
with his singing is a but too much
IMO. The coolest thing is that this is in
fact the first album Gary ever played
on!
