 1. GENERAL NEWS
 ---------------

The forthcoming album might be released in the end of the year, it is said to be totally different to what Gary has done before! There is no definite time schedule for the release of the album yet.

The Peter Green interview article that Tomoyuki wrote appeared in the July issue of the Japanese "THE HO-NO-O".  Peter was saying that Gary "never made a single mistake" during the Shepherds Bush bash in April'95.  Tomoyuki will be writing more articles on Peter for various other mags, though they'll be in Japanese only...

Check out the July issue of Record Collector No. 203, it's feature on Cozy Powell with discography.

Subject: Some questions

Hi, first of all I would like to thank and encourage all of you to keep on "editing" this tinny-huge magazine.
My question is if there's anybody who knows if Gary have planned to come someday to Spain.
That's all
Thanks a lot in advance for the information.
Llu¡s Armengol i Dulcet

Comment from Ole-Johan:
As you know Gary is in the studio and recording for a new record. There are no plans for any concerts this year. BBM's best concert in San Sebatian after Gary's and Gary's manger opinion. So I would say your chances are there.

Subject: Gary King of the Blues

Dear Ole-Johan Wilfred Backman!

Thanks a billion for sending me the first three issues of Gary's Action Zone, keep up the good work as they say!

I've got two cardboard sleeves for Gary's first 12" from Still got the Blues - except they aren't cut out or folded yet - fresh from the printer you might say. Now, what would be front and back are what they should be like: Gary Moore - Oh Pretty Woman featuring Albert King. But I think there's a misprint on what would be the sides (the narrow bits, you know): It says '612962  Gary Moore - I'll be your shelter - Maxi-Single - 12 inch'. It's been printed in Germany. That set me wondering: Has anybody else seen covers like that, or is it a rarity? Is it worth MONEY (not that I'm parting with it anyway)? Has there ever been a song or the idea of a song called 'I'll be your shelter' or where did the printer get the idea from? I'd be happy to hear from anyone who's seen similar things or who could enlighten me a bit.

That's it for the moment, don't forget to send me the next 500 issues of GAZ!!!
Finally, something to look forward to!

Thanks a lot!
Jüergen

Answer from Ole-Johan:
I have the German issues 12" of Oh Pretty Woman in two different top side prints. One is misprinted '612962  Gary Moore - I'll be your shelter - Maxi-Single - 12 inch' by the manufacture for the German release and 1st pressing only . The manufacture made change for 2st pressing on the top side of sleeve, '612962  Gary Moore - Oh Pretty Woman - Maxi-Single - 12 inch'. I don't think this differnce will make one of the two 'different' issues any more value.
For those unfolded covers I guess you could get between GBP 5-10 for them each, depending how desparte the GM collector is! Further comments are also welcome.

>Did Gary peak after he made 'Still Got The Blues album'?
>Or did he peak before or after that album?
>Is it something you missing in those last album
>Tell us WHY!

Response: Gary is in the best form of his career. The Blues suits him 100%. I was/am not into Gary's pre blues stuff, in fact I hate it! I know this will make all of the Gary Moore fans cringe, but the fact is that if it wasn't for Gary's blues, I wouldn't listen to him. I am a huge blues fan and am more so into new blues artists rather than tradtional ones. Modern interpretations of the blues by artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, and Gary Moore is exciting to listen to but unfortunatly is a dying artform. I've listened to Gary's pre blues stuff and feel that most of his guitar playing on the recent albums surpasses the older stuff. His ability to match licks with the likes of BB King, Albert Collins, and Albert King show his ability and diversity. I doubt that he could have played as well in the late eighties. Gary is my favorite artist, blues or otherwise, but if he reverts back to his eighties style of rock noise I'm affraid I'll have to rely on his blues albums to get my Gary Moore fixes.

>Topic 2: SUBJECT: GAZ - NEW ALBUM
>What would you like Gary to play on the new album?
>You can also make addtional suggestions regardless what we know about the
>new album.
>Of course tell us WHY. It doesn't have to be a long essay, but just some lines!

Response: Why Moore blues, of course. Eric Clapton had one of the best albums of his career playing the blues acoustically, Gary should follow suit. An album like Clapton's "From the Cradle" would make Gary a household blues name and probably earn him a grammy and more. Think about it. What better way to show off his talents than to cover his own material and some traditional blues acoustically? On some of his latest cd single releases, a few of the songs were in fact done acoustically. Fantastic stuff! Another similar idea would be a studio album of blues with a special guest on each song. Lynott, Greene, BB King, and all of the other blues greats he has performed with over the years. The album could be all new material that Gary writes or co-writes rather than stuff that has already been done. Point being, "From the Cradle" was so powerful and helpful to Clapton's career, a similar album done Gary Moore style would prove to be even more powerful.

DEAR OLE-JOHAN WILFRED BACKMAN,

I DON'T BELIEVE ANYONE CAN SAY THAT GARY HAS PEAKED UNTIL HE "CHECKS OUT" OF THE HOTEL EARTH.  WHEN GARY IS "ON" HIS GUITAR RUNS GO STRAIGHT TO MY SOUL!  NO PERSON CAN PREDICT WHAT GM WILL PRODUCE IN THE FUTURE. I BELIEVE GARY'S STRENGTHS ARE AT THE EXTREMES OF THE BLUES.  THE FIRE-BREATHING, SCREAMING GUITAR ATTACK, IN YOUR FACE BLUES SEEM TO BE GM'S PRIVATE DOMAIN.  HE IS UNPARALLELED IN THIS GENRE.  I ALSO BELIEVE GM CAN HOLD HIS OWN IN THE SLOW-BURNING, FROM THE HEART, BARE THE SOUL BLUES. AS WITH ALL BLUES ARTISTS, EMOTION IS THE KEY.  GM CAN FIRE IT UP, OR SLOW IT WAY DOWN.  AT EITHER SPEED, GM COMES OUT A WINNER!
SINCERELY,

THE SCOTTISH HAMMER

Subject: GAZ - Discussion for Submissions

I feel that he hit his peak creatively on the Run for Cover and Wild Frontier albums. Those albums show him at his best. The writing and playing on those albums are great. He shows a lot of sides on those albums. The blues albums were very good and a breath of fresh air following After the War. SGTB may have been his most succesful album commercially but I do not feel it was his best effort. Gary is very adept at playing many styles of music but I feel he is at his best playing slow melodic music (Loner, SGTB, PW, etc.). Military Man has exceptional playing on it especially live. I love the fusion stuff he used to play also.

Here is what I would like to see for the new album. I don't want him to go back to what he was doing 10 years ago. Maybe I am getting old but I would like to hear something kind of mellow. Something kind of smooth with a touch of new age to it. Some instrumentals similar to the Loner, slow songs like Separate Ways, some good acoustic playing also. No more versions of PW or Empty Rooms though! The new songs on Blues & Ballads all seem to fit these crtieria. I think that he needs to keep changing directions to stay fresh. This would be something new and fresh.

i dont like to think about it   but   i do believe that still got the blues is the best thing that he has done in some time i think that part of the reason may be that   when he did the blues  it was all fresh and he had so many ideas that it was easy to fill an album with good songs  but on after hours his song selection seemed to slip like he was trying to fill an album he needs some new inspiration by the way do you or have you ever got to talk to gary and can you tell me anything about his new album or a tour ?
thanx tex

Comment from Ole-Johan:
I have contact with Gary's management, they have very low profile about the new album, except for what I have told you in earlier issues of GAZ. But soon as the information is given from the management, we will publish it in GAZ. I am sorry for not having more info to give you.

I don't think Gary peacked after the "Still Got the Blues". "Still..." is a great album and he plays a lot on it. I'm unhappy with the Blues Alive album. I always expect an unedited live album from Gary. I heard that the japanese version has some bonus track.

I think that the new album will be more rocky, but with a little touch of blues.

   Hi,
My opinion on the subject has he peaked. I dont think so I think with his talent the options are unlimited.I really the journey into the blues and think he made a great fit and even enhanced his playing for the experience. As for what i'd like to hear next?. It doesn't matter as long as it gets here soon. Please don't pull a Eric Johnson and keep us waiting for 4 years. I wouldn't mind more blues from Gary but if he's tired of it maybe a rock album would be great. Thanks for granting this forum to express our feelings.

From: Rene Aagaard, The Author of Gary Moore 'Bible'
Subject: Greedies and Hard Drivin' Man

Dear Lennart, Tomoyuki and Ole-Johan

I read about the news of the finding of a studio version of 'Hard Drivin' Man' with GM and The Greedies. Of course all now know, that the song was a great live number for Lizzt in the early days of 1974 when GM was with them foir the first time.

Less known (Partly because it is not in the Bible (Yet!), but it will be in the final version coming out soon.

Soon?? Yes, the publisher/printer have promised: 'Before the summer vacation', well, as I said, less known aew two facts about GM's recodrings in early 1978 at the time of the recording 'Back On The The Streets'. I think I read it in the great Swedish fanzine 'Thin Lizzy News' from 1982-84.

GM recorded with Steve Jones and Paul Cook long before the Greedies had their debut (29. July 1978). As the Greedies was primarily a Phil Lunott invention, without him it's not the Greedies not in my opinion. The studio recording of 'Hard Drivin' Man' that you mentioned must be this one. As I recall reading GM said in the interview that he still had the tapes, but he couldn't remember but one title. As it is very late addition, it is very short in the Bible.

From The Bible:

1978. Spring
(Presum.) Producer: Chris Tsangerides & GM
   Morgan Studios, London

GM, Guitar, Vocals - Steve Jones, Guitar - Paul Cook, Drums

   1. Hard Drivin' Man
   2. ?
   3. ?
   With Gary Moore

Around the time of the recording the 'Back On The Streets' album, GM recorded three songs together with two punkers (and greedies to be) Steve Jones and Paul Jones, None have surfaced.

    *****

Another piece of very interesting info came from the same fanzine and was about the recording of the 'Back On The Streets' album itself.

From The Bible:

1978. Spring
(Presum.) Producer: Chris Tsangerides & GM
   Morgan Studios, London

GM, Guitar, Vocals 3 - John Mole, Bass - Don Airey, Keyboards - Simon Philips, Drums

   1. Flight Of The Snow Moose
   2. Hurricane
   3. Song For Donna
   4. What Would You Rather Bee Or Wasp
   5. Parisienne Walkways
   With Gary Moore

The 'Back On The Streets' Album was recorded twice. The first version was almost all instrumental, recorded in jazzy colosseum II style. The only vocals were on 'Song For Donna'. The tracks mention4ed are presumably the onces recorded for the first version, a few more tracks must have been recorded to form an album, knowning that the title song only is present on the second version and that the lissy song 'Don't Believe A Word' and 'Fanatical Fascists' must have come with Phil Lunott. The Title for the first version of the album is not known.

None of the songs have surfaced to this date. (Songs and musicians mentioned, not included in the indexes for this session).

   *****

As you can read in this late addition, there are some speculations about it from me. But it is a wellknown fact, that GM thought of 'Parisienne Walkways' as an istrumental, until Lynott wrote some lyrics. It's also wellknown, that Lynott's middelname was Parris (after his father surname), and that he was born in 1949 (and not 1951 asz he said for many years lying himself two years younger, just as GM did! when he was in Lizzy. See the questionaire on the final page in the Bible! (The Final one, this is)). So that's where some of the lyrics came from. One must believe, that the instrumentals on the released version of the album, was on the first one too, and maybe they weren't even rerecorded. The Lynott songs were added, when lynott was. But I don't know which songs are missing to form an entire album.

Well, Thank you for listening!

Best wishes from
Rene Aagaard

Ole-Johan,
Thanks for all of the info you send! I am looking for a few promotional posters and am wondering if you can help me find them. I want one of each of the last few releases up to "After Hours". The problem I am running into is that most promotional posters were sent to record stores, used or given away, then thrown out, making them very hard to track down. Any suggestions as to where I might find some or who might have some they would want to sell? Please let me know. I used to have a really cool one of Gary for the "After Hours" album and a cool one for "Ballads and Blues" but can't find them. I want to frame them and put them in my living room. Thanks for your help.
