1. GENERAL NEWS
---------------
The forthcoming album might be released in the end of the year, it is said to be totally different to what Gary has done before! There is no definte time schedule for the release of the album yet.
In May issue of Record Collector, they presented this year'a reader's Top 500 collectanble artist. Gary Moore was on the 233. place fallen from 211 (1994: 283, 1993: 190, 1992: out of the list). Thin Lizzy 81. place climbed from 101 (1994: 108, 1993: 180, 1992: 181). It's not so bad for Gary Moore since the promotion hasn't been the best for Gary lately. But we should expect huge promotion for the new album, otherwise Virgin is far out. I don't think Gary Moore will accept a low profile for this album after four years since his last 'own' album.
Tomoyuki Yamazaki interviewed Peter Green at his home in Surrey on 20 April. He is doing very, very fine, and is very enthusiastic about re-starting his musical career. He has already recorded one track for the Shadows tribute album, followed by a couple of tribute stuff and, yes, a new album. The interview will appear on "THE HO-NO-O" magazine in Japan (sorry, in Japanese only!), followed by coverages in a number of Japanese magazines. Tomoyuki would like to thank Michelle, Nigel and Steve Mash for making it happen.
Have you noticed it's two people playing
the guitar on the picture, when you have opened the booklet of the Blues
For Greeny CD? I guess some of you noticed, it took me 10 months to notice
it. The left hand belongs to no other than............. yes! Peter Green.
Really nice gimmick, especially when you open the booklet further and see
the two pictures of Gary and Peter matching the guitar picture! GM's Management
confirms it was Peter Green's hand!

2. COLLECTORS NEWS
------------------
R.P.M. Records will not release the two albums of Greg Lake, 'Greg Lake' and 'Manoeuvers' in UK this spring. Bruce Pilato, Greg Lake's mananger; said that they didn't have the rights for releasing the two albums. So that means we have to wait some more for the 'Manoeuvers' album on CD.
An addition to the 1995 releases is
the following item. It comes just in jewel case without inserts etc, just
with plain one track CD.
5" CD-Singles Promo:
I NEED YOUR LOVE SO BAD GMBGS2
VIRGIN RECORDS ESP 1995
For your info the catalogue number
of "Blues For Greeny Live" in Japan is: East West Japan AMVY-8093.
It will not be released on a laserdisc.
In UK it's also released now. I have
got my copy ordered now, And the info is:
BLUES FOR GREENY LIVE (TIME: 89 MIN.)
0630 13691-3 WARNER MUSIC VISION UK 1996
The Thin Lizzy remaster CDs will be released in Japan as well. The first batch will be in the shops on 26 June, and the second 26 July. The sounds are improved, but I could still notice the horrible hiss noises apparent on Black Rose.
New bootleg: Final Frontier (Bondage
Music BON067)
Over the Hills / Thunder Rising /
Shapes Of Things / Military Man / So Far Away - Empty Rooms / Out In the
Fields / Rockin' Every Night / All Messed Up / Murder In the Skies
Taken from a live FM broadcast at
the Paradise Theater, Boston MA on 1st September '87 (the final gig of
the Wild Frontier Tour). The original broadcast was done live on
the air, and the total duration was approx. 100 minutes. The bootleggers
didn't give a shit and dropped The Loner to make the bootleg a single disc.
The sound quality is okay, but the source tape could have been from any
of the tapes circulating among the collectors. The cover is a shot
of Gary during the Run For Cover tour, which again proves how ignorant
the guys who made this are. It's not such a bad bootleg if you don't
have the tape, but there's nothing to be crazy about really. - Tomoyuki

Subject: Gary Moore stuff sale/trade
I will negotiate a little if you buy
in quantities. Most of the stuff I
think is priced cheap because I want
to get rid of it. Everything is in
great shape unless stated. The more
you buy the better the deal. I will do
trading if you have some things I
need. My want list is at the bottom. I
also
wouldn't mind just getting some of
them on tape if you only have one copy.
All prices in American dollars.

FEATURES: The RPO & friends
(Arrested) session
----------------------------------------------
Hi, Lulea, April 29 1996
This time I will write about a session that Gary Moore did back in the early 80s which contained covers of songs by the Police. I picked this session since I was contacted after the previous issue of GAZ by someone who wanted to know more about this session. So if there is one session you would like to know more about drop me an e-mail (notice that I have a new e-mail address!) and I might write about that one next time. Now over to this issue's session...
I don't know much about the background of this project but I think that at some point Don Airey was contacted to do the arrangements for a classical version of some of the songs by the Police (the pop trio consisting of Gordon "Sting" Sumner, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland). He was to do the album together with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Airey who at the time was in Gary Moore's band together with Neil Murray and Ian Paice decided to use his bandmates on the album as well as some other friends of his, including guys like Graham Bonnet (Rainbow, Alcatraz), Roy Wood (E.L.O.), Chris Thompson (Manfred Mann's Earth Band), Keith Airey (brother of Don) and many more. So in many respects this album came to be more of a rock band doing Police covers backed with a symphony orchestra and not the other way around.
Let's look a bit closer to the four tracks where Gary Moore plays.
"Truth Hits Everybody" (Bonnet vocals,
Paice drums, Airey synths)
Gary is present throughout this track.
He is playing the rhythm guitar in the background and he turns in several
squeaks in his usual style. WHat bother me is that the guitar sound is
much more dry than everything else in a way that it doesn't blend in very
well with the big orchestra.
"Arrested" (Paice drums, John McKenzie
bass)
The intro is a guitar line repeated
several times and every time answered by a string section. It then builds
up with the entire orchestra in a very pompous way. Then back to the intro
and so on. Since there are no vocals on this track it makes me feel as
it's some kind of movie soundtrack. Again that dry sound on the guitar...
"Message In A Bottle" (Wood vocals,
Paice drums, Murray bass)
Wood turns in a very Sting-like high-pitched
nasal vocal and Gary uses a cleaner sound for the rhythm part. As usual
you get to hear some typical Moore squeaks here and there, but as on the
other tracks here Gary plays mostly for the song and there are no real
interesting guitar parts. He shows us some speed playing at the end though.
On this track the RPO takes the back seat and this is very much a rock
band with a huge string section backing them up, with the exception of
some horns here and there... I liked this track already when the Police
did it and it's a very unusual track to hear Gary play!
"Invisible Sun" (Airey synthesizers,
Kim Goody vocals, Paice drums)
Dominated by a plopping synthesizer
(Airey) and some dream-like choirs (Goody) this one sounds very little
like the Police original. Gary gets to play the melody line that is the
only thing that makes me detect what song this really is. Gary uses a very
bright and clean sound but nothing interesting really.
All in all not the most interesting
album Gary has played on but you can easily hear it's him playing which
is much harder on some of the other sessions he has done where he has perhaps
been limited to some acoustic guitar playing very much in the background.
I also don't think they have succeeded in mixing the rock band with big
orchestra very well. In my opinion they should have dropped the rock drummers
and electric bass players. That way it would have been real classical versions
but topped with some vocals and with some guitar playing by Gary but with
a less dry sound. On some other tracks Chris Thompson sings in a way that
I wish Gary would work with him on something in the future. Killer vocals!
Gary actually played on Thompson's solo album in the 80s... hmmm maybe
something for the next GAZ? So where to find this album then? Well, I have
not seen the original vinyl more than once and that was when I picked it
up myself at a record show some years back, where it was standing at the
front and I could see "ARRESTED" across the room and I ran over there being
afraid I would see someone pick it up before I could get my hands on it!
:) It has since been re-issued both in Japan and in Europe on CD so you
should be able to find it. The original UK release on vinyl had the full
title "Arrested, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra & Friends presents
The Music Of The Police" (LP, RCALP 8001, RCA/starblend, UK 1983). The
LP came with a nice inner sleeve with lyrics and the back of the sleeve
has full details on who plays what and where. The Japanese CD re-issue
came with the same artwork as the original UK LP but the title was slightly
different "Arrested, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra & Friends presents
The Music Of The Police" (CD, JICK-89316, J!MCO, Japan 1993). I have another
CD re-issue printed somewhere in Europe (EEC) probably in 1994. The packaging
is almost of bootleg quality if you know what I mean, with absolutely no
details about musicians etc. Not even the release year is listed! Here
the full title used
is "Classic Police Performed By The
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra And Guests" (CD, GRF262,Tring/Double Play,
EEC 1994?).
Good luck hunting it down,
