First "discovered" Gary Moore when I saw him open for RUSH in 1984. Have really enjoyed listening to his music since then - particularly his blues stuff. Easy for
me to remember his name too!!

Hi fellow GM fans,
The year of '98 is coming to an end and finally we have a Gary Moore record in the charts again! The compilation album "Out In The Fields - The Very Best Of" is the best selling GM record since the last compilation "Ballads & Blues" in 1994. 4 long years without any success! The CD has already gone gold in Sweden and probably Norway, hopefully with more countries taking after and when Gary eventually will release his new album on a new label, the sales of this compilation will hopefully lead more people to buy the new product. In other words, this will do Gary good! My question here is, why is it so quiet on the net and all of the homepages devoted to GM about this success? Don't you people like the things Gary did in the eighties? For my own sake, I'm very happy to finally get all those great songs digitally remastered and to have all the tracks on the bonus disc on CD! Come on people! Give me some answers here! If 45.000 people in Sweden already has bought the CD, I can't be the only one who's satisfied.

All the best, Soren

Hi .. How ya doing?
Well I got my first Gary Moore recording about a week ago and I love it .. what a great player Gary is .. I have one question for you .. Was Gary Moore a big Rory Gallagher fan and wasnt Rory one of Garys major influences ? .. I ask because I am a huge Rory fan and would love to know the answeres to these questions,
I had heard somewhere that Gary idolized Rory and was deeply upset when he died ..
take care man ..
Mob

Tomoyuki answers:
Back in '97, I have asked Gary Moore about his relationship with Rory Gallagher, as there is a reference in the song Business As Usual.  Gary said that they used to play on the same bill in the late 60s when Rory's band at the time, Taste, came to Belfast.  As they only had one good guitar each, they would borrow each other's guitar as substitute in case a string broke or something.  Since Taste was signed to Polydor, I had assumed that Rory was already famous, but according to Gary, "yeah he was, but he wasn't making money" - hence the line "Rory and me didn't have a spare string between us".  When Rory passed away in June '95, Gary attended his funeral.  I don't think Gary was exactly a 'fan' of Rory, because they belonged in the same generation (Rory was a bit older, born in '49), though he definitely respected Rory's music and playing.  In my opinion, the closest Gary got to Rory's style was probably Moving On.

Hello Fellow Gary Moore fans:

I couldn't agree with Patrick McBride more (issue 20 comment).  What's it gonna take to get this 1st class, A1 performer to come to the U.S.  WE ARE TRUELY DEPRIVED!  For God's sake, we can't even get a U.S. release of DDIP.  How cruel is that?!

There must be some way these messages can be relayed to his agent or manaement staff.  It's hard to believe that he wouldn't at least set up a couple of gigs.  New York State sure would appreciate an appearance!!  There are a lot of people in the U.S. who only know of Gary Moore by "Still Got The Blues" .  That's such an understatement for him considering the balance of his music that we never hear in the U.S.  I always wondered why "Story Of The Blues" never made it to a single, or why "Empty Rooms" only had limited air time.  This country needs an musical enema!!

If Gary could agree to play the U.S. I would personally do whatever it takes to help promote his appearances.  Albany, Saratoga, and Glens Falls, New York would be GREAT spots to set up a few gigs.  PEOPLE WOULD travel from throughout the state to see this guy play.  Anyway - That's my 2 cents worth and my submission for issue 21.

Sincerely,

Rob Volpe

Dear Editor,

I first heard Gary Moore on the old grey whistle test - Live in Germany. The coverage contained I cant wait until tomorrow, Always gonna love you, Parisienne Walkways (maybe more as it is old), and the video tape got damaged. Is there any way of being able to get the coverage again from anywhere. I would love to see it again. Also could you pass on my regards to BIG GARY from Stewart Roberts - who he met at Manchester after his Run For Cover concert when I was 3, and again in Edinburgh after Still Got the Blues when I was 10.

Please help - Reply to stewartroberts@hotmail.com

Hi Ole

Hope your well and the weather is being kind to you (it's dreadful in the UK)

a question posed by Ed Miley in this issue

Gary refers to the old 40 counties or Ireland in the line from Wild Frontier "never more to sing again the 40 shades of green"

The counties were divided many years ago in Irelands history (this I know from my parentage as they are from Northern Ireland and I spent most of my childhood holiday from end of June to beginning of September there). and Tim's parents are from the West of Ireland.

Best Wishes

Subject: Gaz - New Album

I can understand your "negative attitude" about this album.  I admit I was taken in by it and bought it because it had a couple of songs I had not heard before.  And for that, it's worth it and I am glad I have it.  For a "Very Best Of", I can't really find anything wrong with it-- it's just not tailor-made for the die-hard Gary Moore fan who already has all these songs.

The one thing that puzzles me is why does this album only cover Gary's career from about 1985 - 1989??  What does this mean??? Does this mean that everything Gary did before or after this time was not worthy of "the Very Best Of" ??  Or does it mean that they will continue to recycle the rest of  Gary's songs into future "Best Of" albums??

Gee, I can't wait....

Subject: DDIP & moore

Hi, Ole-Johan !
I dared to write this letter only because DDIP has been so heavily critisized. This fact lays out of my comprehension ! Before I listened to DDIP I read so much about it as a sort of ''pop-oriented crap'' and etc. On one hand I was ready to discover something heavily computerized , very much of 90' skin-deep stuff, on other hand I couldn't be able to imagine G.M. as a superficial musician. And I was really shocked when I listened to DDIP for the first time !

I found it exetremely amazing, deep, mysterious ! Believe me  I'm not a big fan of all these fashionable computerized sounds. I always found it very soulless and doesn't connected to music at all. Just some sonical effects for SF movies. But the way all these things took a shape and works in DDIP is absolutely special ! I can't agree with an opinion that all these styles doesn't work together. All these very strange combinations were like suggested by supernatural influence.

For the first time I was listened to DDIP on a seashore quite near from the old Jaffa town where I live. It was like a meditation . All these songs created a sort of maze, it was like a travelling through unknown dimensions, the music almost materialized a surreal visions.( By the way, my psyche is O.K. and there were no " the speed and the acid ". I swear !)

DDIP inspired me for some things ( illustration and graphic design are my field of activity.) But I'm not going to talk about myself as you understand . I always think that great music, G.M. playing in particularly has a significant association with nature. For me there's no doubt that a sea wave fluent motion  and these long breathtaking guitar sounds combines into one ! Just like a Homer's poetry. Hexameter's line of verse is in unison with a swell of a sea. I wouldn't like to sound pretencious but this anology have came to my mind.

And again I realized how "What are we here for" and "Afraid of timorrow" are close to west asia atmosphere! I read in one interview that "Afraid of tomorrow" was inspired by the book about Morocco and Egypt. G.M. was very precize at this point. This music has a flavour of Arabian Nights. I can't pretend to talk about music on professional level but I've been living in west Asia for a long time and I met a lot of sounds from all immense arabian world.

I agree with opinion that DDIP music is weird. Maybe in some ways it's hard to comprehension but the words of russian american writer V.Nabokov(well-known by "Lolita") came to my mind. He said that the genuine art never presumed to be simple. So my hat off ! I respect G.M. for this album. I respect him for  being " far above the madding crowd". He always will be unpredictible and he will do what he want not what we shall expect. It'll never bring him  commercial success but this's what I call a real creative person !

I don't mean to offend  somebody but I can't  understand when people said something like :" I prefer him rocky" or "I'm G.M. blues period fan" or when somebody try to compilate imaginary "best of" albums, or counted the seconds or minutes of guitar solos. For me this's very strange. It doesn't mean that I really love everything and my feelings are so blind. First of all he's guitar genius . Definitely, his playing is one of the most impressive things in my life. But all his albums from Skid Row stuff to DDIP exposes this unique sincerity and passion. He's always wild of emotions. I call it " soul striptease". (Maybe rather ridiculous comparison but I hope you understand what I mean.) This's the thread through all his albums and  his hallmark.

I'm really sorry for such a long, annoying letter ! Thank you very much for GAZ !
I'm waiting for #21 ! Good luck!
Best regards from The Holy Land!
Helen

I became an instant fan when friends of mine took me to see Gary Moore at the Beacon Theater in 1992. What impressed me the most, besides  his playing, was the versatility of the music. To many artist sound the same from album to album. After that night I starting collecting Gary's music & have managed to acquire quite a few CD's & even a video of the Blues Alive tour. I was surprised to learn Gary is not as popular here in the States as he is in Europe. So when I went to France in 97 one of my objectives was to add to my collection. At the time I was disappointed cos all they had was Dark Days In Paradise. I was expecting to purchase more than one CD. Now I realize how lucky I was. It's one of my treasures from the trip. I've enjoyed reading your back issues & look forward to the next one.

Thanks

Subject: US Tour ??

Hello
I've been wondering when Gary Moore will again grace the concert stages of the United States again, specifically the Los Angeles California area. I last saw him at the Universal Ampetheater for the Still Got The Blues/After Hours show and I must say, It was damn near a religous experience. Listening to Gary live made the hair all over my body stand up on end. He is in my opinion the vey best rock/blues guitar player on the globe. Ive yet to see anyone better and Ive seen all the greats, Buck Dharma, Richie Blackmore, Rory Gallagher, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Steve Morse, Ronnie Montrose and the list goes on. Gary tops this list for sure. So Im sure hoping that he gets back to Los Angeles soon. Do you have any idea when this might occur ?. What has he been up to latley ?. Here in Los Angeles we have no real outlet as far as radio is concerned that plays any of his music, or any other great music for that matter, so we  here are unaware of what plans he has. If you have contact with him, let Gary know that he is missed here and has a huge fanbase in Los Angeles waiting to here from him again. Thanks for this outlet.
