Gary's Action Zone
------------------------
Welcome!
------------------------
We are back with the second issue of GAZ, we are still getting more subscribers. It's gone 5 weeks since I sent out the first issue, now it's time again. It's not much info coming out from the Gary Moore camp about the new record. But we will keep you informed when we hear something important.
We would like to give Fred J. Bourgoin a BIG thank you, putting the e-mail address on his WWW-page. Thanks again Fred, keep up the good work you do with the Gary Moore Web page. We will also give big thank you to Dawn Poole, for doing the same on The Thin Lizzy WWW-page.
We are 97 subscribers by now, and still
getting more. Following countries are now represented: USA, Canada, UK,
Ireland, Spain, Germany, Holland, Japan, France, Sweden, Norway, Barbados,
Mexico, Brazil and Peru.
We are missing following continents:
Africa and Australia. It means we can say we are world-wide!!! There are
still some problems with some of your addresses. We are working on it,
but if you hear from people not getting 'GAZ', Please send them a copy.
We will make a list soon with those addresses we have trouble with. If
you have't got issue 1 by know let and I will send it soon as possible
to you.
About the request to make a list about what Gary Moore has released, I will take the responsibillity to make such a list and I am working on it now. I will use UK-issues as a basis, and all records is significant different will also be listed. The reasons for using UK releases are that the most of the releases are nearly the same, and when I list those with significant differences will cover all formats/releases. Significant differences can be different covers, B-Sides/tracks, inserts etc. If you have anything against it, please let me know at once. All of you with rare/obscure Gary Moore records, send me a mail. The Info I need is: Format, Tracks, Record number & Company, Country, Year, Sleeve info and inserts. In issue #3 I will try to make the list of 7" ready.
All the news from the editors are put in the sections 'General News' and 'Collectors News'. The info you provide will be put in the submission section.
In this issue it will feature: DR. Strangely Strange session written by Lennart.
If some of you will be off line from the net, and still want to get the info that GAZ provides, you can then subscribe 'Emerald Blues'. The Fee is GBP 5,- or USD 10,- a year (5-7 issues). My address you will find in Section 6.
Do you think anything is missing or need improvements, I am happy to hear your comments.
Happy Easter to you all!
- Have enjoyable reading
Best regards.......

1. GENERAL NEWS
---------------
There is been found a studio version of 'Hard Drivin' Man' preformed by the Greedies featuring GM. Finally a confirmed Studio session with The Greedies where GM appears. I was informed by GM's management about this discover.
The forthcoming album might be released
in end of the year, is said to be totally different to what Gary has done
before! There is no definte time schedule for the release album yet.

2. COLLECTORS NEWS
------------------
R.P.M. Records will release in UK the two albums of Greg Lake, 'Greg Lake' and 'Manoeuvers' this spring. More info when they are released.
In France they have released in '93, 7" of 'Parisienne Walkways'93' backed with 'Still Got The Blues (Live)' as Jukebox issues in white glossy sleeve with 'Gary Moore' printed in black. It's said to be pressed in 500 copies only. Cat.nr: 918 627 - Virgin - France - 1993.
Gary's concert at Shepherds Bush Empire
is planned to be released 29. April 1996. The video is called 'Blues For
Greeny LIVE'
Tomoyuki Yamazaki has following review
about the video: The title is "Blues For Greeny Live" and is approx
90 minutes long. The video includes all the songs except The Stumble
and Key To Love, and has some short interview excerpts with Gary.
There are some short film of Peter Green in the 60s or 70s. A great
video, I know you're going to check it out, but check it out NOW!
Need Your Love So Bad really makes you fall down in tears! Tomoyuki Yamazaki
wrotes liner notes on the Japanese issue of Blues For Greeny Live video
(East West Japan AMVY-8093).
Thin Lizzy's 'Black Rose' album is released on remastered CD, and it's the only remastered Thin Lizzy album featuring Gary. No extra tracks etc, another sloppy work from Phonogram, like 'Wild One' CD. Thanks to Soeren Lindberg for letting us know about the remasters of Thin Lizzy.
New bootleg released. This time it's
BBM's concert from Le Zenith, Paris 28. June 1994. CD called "Momentary
Dream In Paris" (no label, no cat.number). DISC 1: Waiting In the Wings
/ City Of Gold / I Wonder Why / Sitting On Top Of the World / Glory Days
/ Naked Flame / Deserted Cities Of the Heart / Can't Fool the Blues / Rollin'
And Tumblin' - DISC 2: Tales Of Brave Ulysses / High Cost Of Loving / Why
Does Love (Have To Go Wrong?) // I Feel Free / Spoonful / Politician
Tomoyuki Yamazaki has following review
about the CD: Audience recording of the Paris Le Zenith show on 28 June
1994. The source tape is of excellent quality, and the performance
is absolutely fabulous. Songs like City Of Gold and Glory Days sound
much gutsier live, and this Japanese bootleg is a perfect way to find out.
I totally recommend this.
Anothe new bootleg: GARY MOORE "Nuclear
Attack" (Sonic Zoom SZ 2005 / 2006. DISC 1: Intro / End Of the World /
Wishing Well / Rockin' Every Night / Cold Hearted / Nuclear Attack / I
Can't Wait Until Tomorrow / Always Gonna Love You / Hurricane - Ian Paice
solo - DISC 2: White Knuckles / Rockin' And Rollin' / Back On the Streets
// Don't Take Me For a Loser / Gonna Break My Heart Again / Sunset / Higher
Grounds
Tomoyuki Yamazaki has following review
about the CD: Audience recording of the Tokyo Shinjuku Koseinenkin Kaikan
gig on 31 January 1983. A Japanese double CD bootleg. The sound
quality is okay, but nothing really to scream about. Housed in a
paper sleeve with sleeve photo taken from the Japanese '83 tour programme.
Re-issue of Keith Emerson's CD of "The Christmas Album". Gary Moore plays on one track: 'Captain Starships Christmas' on this album as we know by now. Apparently it is completely remastered, has two new tracks added and comes with a new cover (Emerson on a motorbike with a red Santa "cap" on! :)). The CD is $15.98 or autographed CD $ 21.98 plus shipping. It is available from: Sundown Records, P.O. Box 241, Newbury Park, CA 91320, USA, Phone: 1-800-825-4106, Fax: 1-805-499-904 - Regarding the Emerson track, an outtake simply titled 'Starship' is on the album "The Emerson Collection". Beware, as it does NOT have Gary playing on it.
Info about US release of 'Blues For Greeny' - See the submissions
Some have asked how to get the two albums of Skid Row on CD. Both albums are released on Rewind/Colombia, and should be easy to order in UK. The 'Skid Row' album has the catalogue nr: 477 360 2 released august 1994 , and '34 Hours' catalogue nr: 480 525 2, released august 1995. So just contact your UK dealer.
I have bought the two track CD-Single
'891 870 2' of 'Parisienne Walkways '93' in hard paper cover released in
France, I have also the 'VSCDE 1456' Dutch version. I compared the two
back sleeves, they was significant different. The interesting was on the
French issue, there was standing 'Continuous play cassette' on CD-Single
back of the cover!!!! I have the cassette-single in slip cover, and those
backcovers they matched exactly. So Virgin France has done a sloppy job
verifying the cover, or they said what the hell it's to late get a new
one. Anybody else having this issue of the French CD-Single 'Parisienne
Walkways '93' can verify this.
As promised we present the releases from 1995, but without compilations released that year. So if you see any items missing let me know.

Subject: Greg Lake featuring Gary
Hello from Spain!
By the way, the fanzine is really great!!!
I love Gary Moore (his music). I follow his career since I knew him on
Cozy Powell's 'Tilt'. The song 'Sunset' is one of my favourite songs, followed
by 'It hurts' (on 1st Greg Lake album). Can you tell me if is Gary Moore
the guitar player in this track (or if there is some session player). I'd
like to get the list of songs on where he plays on the two Greg Lake albums.
Congratulations, and keep on doing
it. Thanks
- Comment from: Ole-Johan
Listed below is Gary's tracks with
Greg Lake:
- Greg Lake, Released 1981: 'Nuclear
Attack', 'Love You Too Much', 'It Hurts', 'Retribution Drive', 'Long Goodbye'
& 'The Lie'.
- Manoeuvers, Released 1983: 'Manoeuvers',
'Too Young To Love', 'Paralysed', 'A Woman Like You' & 'I Don't Wanna
Lose Your Love Tonight'.

Subject: Greg Lake King Biscuit In
Concert CD
Hello all!
The page has finally moved (but you probably already know that)! BTW I fixed the link to the Guitar Planet site; check it out if you haven't done so yet.
I bought the K.B.F.H. "In Concert" Greg lake CD last year, but I was shocked to discover there was another cover out there!! The one I originally bought has a white & purple cover and the CD itself is white. The one I bought this weekend has a black & gold cover and the CD itself is gold. I looked through the booklets and they provide the same info although the layout is different. The only difference I could find was that the "gold" version was distributed by BMG while the other was printed in Canada.
Do you know anything more about those CDs. It seems that the "gold" CD was released very recently as I found it in the "news releases" section. Is this a re-release already?
Here's the answer to the Greg Lake "mystery"...

Subject: Re: Greg Lake in Concert
'GREG LAKE LIVE IN CONCERT ON THE KING BISCUIT FLOWER HOUR" has been released by King Biscuit Records (distributed by BMG in the USA; EMI in Canada; Sony in Japan and various other distribution outlets elsewhere ) and it is selling VERY well. It was originally released last summer on King Biscuit Records through Passport Distributors. In 1996 distribution shifted to BMG and EMI and the artwork was changed. Also, the new disc (with black & gold artwork) features my CORRECT liner notes.
That's it! (I'll have to check the liner notes, though.) He adds: Look for a 2 CD Greg Lake "Career Retrospective" to be released by Rhino/Atlantic Records in June of 1996. It will be a collection of previously released and unreleased rare tracks from King Crimson, thru the various groupings of ELP & ELPowell, and Greg's solo tracks from the 1980s.
Unreleased tracks from the 1980s solo albums?...

Subject: My Favourite Gary Gig
Hi All,
Greetings from Dublin.
I am proud to say that I had the pleasure
of meeting and playing with Gary in Dublin 1987. I was a member of "Talk
to Strangers" (Drums : Brian Downey / Bass : Pat Courtney / Guitar : Joe
Staunton / Keyboards : me) at the time and Gary was in town writing for
his next album. He was also hoping to get Brian to join his band... anyway
, I am happy to say that Gary was a nice bloke and had no air of pretence
about him. Needless to say that as soon as he was spotted in the bar ("Slattery's"
on Capel Street in Dublin) the regulars (all huge Lizzy fans) got on the
phone and called everyone they knew - the venue was packed.....for weeks
later we were turning people away at the door......happy memories indeed.
What songs ? mmmm. memory isn't too great. I remember playing a blues song
as well as Parisienne Walkways (of course) and Whiskey in the Jar.
Now : does anyone have a tape or even
photos of this night ? I've got some tapes of myself with the band that
I'd trade for these...
-Peter Fitzpatrick
Comment from Ole-Johan:
WOW!!! This mail was really a great
and nice surprise, Thanks a lot sharing your memories with us. This also
clear out when Gary started to record for After the War album (What retrospective
album this album would have been with Brian on drums). Gary played a gig
with Brush Shields at Slattery's 19. Sep 1989 as well. More of that some
other time.

FEATURES: DR. STRANGELY STRANGE
SESSION
---------------------------------------
Hello everyone, Lulea March 29, 1996
I have decided to once every now and
then write a little about the various
sessions Gary Moore has done over
the years. There are so many sessions he has
done with others in so many different
styles so I thought it could be of use to
others to know a little about them
before you spend you heard earned cash on
for example an expensive import. The
first one I will write about is Dr
Strangely Strange's album "Heavy Petting"
from 1970. I haven't decided in which
order I will go through these sessions,
so if there is one or two you would

So now over to the first of these
sessions I will write about...
Band: Dr Strangely Strange
Title: Heavy Petting
The original LP was release by Vertigo
(6360 009) in 1970. It came with a
special die-cut sleeve. A warning
though, word is that there are pirate copies
of this album circulating out there
with die-cut sleeves and everything. The
reason for this is the fact that this
album is rare and quite a collectible. I
have seen it being advertised in Record
Collector (UK magazine) for around 50-
60 UK pounds. It was re-issued on
CD in 1992 by Repertoire Records (REP
4273-WP). So you should be able to
get hold of the music without having to
spend a small fortune.
So what was Dr Strangely Strange all
about then? Well, they were an Irish band
and prior to "Heavy Petting" they
had released an album titled "Kip Of The
Serenes" but that album does not feature
Gary Moore and I have not heard it.
Judging by "Heavy Petting" DSS made
music that was a mix of rock, folk and not
the least some psychedelia, after
all they were a product of the 1960s. ;) The
album has a generally relaxed vibe
about it.
I have only seen Gary comment on this
album once in print and that was in
Record Collector, No. 190 June 1995.
He was interviewed by RC's Mark Paytress.
Asked about the session Gary answered:
- "Dr. Strangely Strange were
very much in the mould of the Incredible String
Band. Folk influences but very acidy
acoustic music. I only guested on a couple
of tracks. I lived with them in a
house when I was 16, and these were the
hippest people you could hang out
with in Dublin! They were much older -
artists, hippies. They had this Renault,
with a big harmonium strapped to it,
and we'd all take something that you
weren't allowed to take and jam all night
on stage. It was a very free environment
in those days in Dublin."
Despite the fact that Gary is quoted
saying "a couple of tracks" he is credited
on the album playing on four tracks:
"Summer Breeze", "Sign On My Mind", "Gave
My Love An Apple" and "Mary Malone
Of Moscow". He is credited for "lead guitar"
on all four. Besides Gary I note that
Brendan "Brush" Shiels, the founder and
leader of Gary's then current band
Skid Row, makes an appearance playing bass
of course.
"Summer Breeze" is a slow or maybe
slow mid-tempo song with a solo by Moore
that starts out bluesy but kind of
loses its direction at the end. The tone is
a bit distorted but not with much
attack to it. "Sign On My Mind" is a slow
ballad-like folky track with whistles,
mandolines and all. Did I say that the
vocals are pretty lame with its mellow
almost spoken typical folk rock voices.
I didn't? Well now I have. :) The
guitar solo on this one comes in after a
whistle solo (!) and this time the
tone is softer and Gary shows us some Peter
Green-like licks. Gary fiddles around
a while and even if it is not bad it is
a bit uninteresting. Just no clear
direction just some... ehrm well "fiddling"
covers it I guess. :) There are some
faster passages and there are longer clean
notes. The most exciting about the
session is that this is one of the very
first sessions Gary did and there
are not many recorded moments from this early
on. Gary was a young evolving player
still developing his own style. There are
clear indications of talent but maybe
nothing that would have you think this
was a player of guitar hero status
in just a few years. "Mary Malone Of Moscow"
is a bit more stomping and slightly
faster than the other tracks described
above. Gary plays yet again a bluesy
solo. This time maybe his most inspired
performance on the album. A short
explosive solo but with it's dirty tone and
attack it my favorite on the album.
Gary's guitar is featured squeaking in the
background throughout most of this
track. All in all maybe not Gary's most
essential session work but as it's
one of his earliest I still would like to
recommend it at least to those out
there who are really die-hard fans.
