Here's my thoughts on garys new cd.!
First a couple comments.I've been a fan since G-FORCE.Guitar wise he's
the best no matter what style he plays.I'm glad he changed styles, the blues
were getting boring. The new cd is a shock at first, but if you give it a
chance some of it is very good, but there are some disapointments. Here goes:
1. ONE GOOD REASON(3:O2)
Strange tune.Lousey effect
on the vocals.20 secs of cool slide work, otherwise a complete waste of
time.
2. COLD WIND BLOWS (5:26)
Hard to describe.low
vocals,repetitious bass/drum beat.60 secs. of decent slide work.It grows
on you.
3. I HAVE FOUND MY LOVE IN YOU(4:53)
Best cut on the cd! Ballad, cool
beat, with some tasteful haunting guitar work.Almost sounds like "SADE".
4. ONE FINE DAY(4:57)
Upbeat.Can't place what
it reminds me of.Has nice bass line. Not enough guitar.decent tune.
5. LIKE ANGELS(7:32)
Lousey ballad.Bland.But
it does have 2 solos!!1st is 35 secs, fair solo(you've heard bits and pieces
elswhere),2nd solo is 1:42 secs long and is the best on the cd,but the
song basically sucks.
6. WHAT ARE WE HERE FOR(5:43)
Another nice ballad with
more haunting guitar!nice lyrics too. End solo is 1:35 secs long(good solo),and
the slide effect that ends the tune is really cool!
7. ALWAYS THERE FOR YOU(4:33)
Latin feel.upbeat,not
bad for what it is,not much guitar until half way, then some mellow tastful
guitar that ends tune.
8. AFRAID OF TOMMORROW(6:39)
upbeat,nice beat.percussion
driven mainly.some nice guitar and string arrangements, has a middle eastern
feel (led zep/kasmir feel in last half).Needs a solo!
9. WHERE DID WE GO WRONG(6:36)
Another lousey ballad.bland.Last
2 mins. features a mediocre solo.
10. BUSINESS AS USUAL (13:34)
ballad.kind of
tedious,repetitious for 13 mins.A couple secs of tastful guitar/strings
here and there. There's a cool song here somewhere, but this version isn't
it.
11. hidden title track....sucks period.
CD SINGLE:
1. ONE GOOD REASON.
see above review.
2. BURNING IN OUR HEARTS(6:01)
upbeat,slightly funky
feel.cool tune,grows on you.
3. THERE MUST BE A WAY(4:04)
reggae tune.bland.
4. BEASTS OF BURDEN(6:37)
instrumental/ballad.sounds
like a movie soundtrack.excellent tune!hint of JEFF BECK!Nice guitar through
out.Should be on the cd.
that's it ....my names DON,I live in pa,in the U.S.A.

We in Edmonton, Canada have not recieved anything yet, but I got a CD single"one good reason". I have been listening to Gary for 15 years and I do not mind it and it is starting to grow on me. I do not understand what the big fuss is from the fans. Gary has been changing styles forever and this EURO-POP is no exception. When he went "blue" My guitar friends here said he had gone crazy and swore never to buy a thing of his again. I think Gary is looking for "the big" hit in the states. In Canada "Still got the Blues" was reguarded a sleeper hit. He has done it all and I think pop won't hurt.

hy
i just came back from my holidays
ok here my impressions from the concert
of 9 july 1997:
in the newspaper it was announced
as the gary moore night. because gary moore didn't want to have only a
concert, one of a view. during a evening there are always more than 2,
3 or more concerts. so he said, that he'll come to switzerland only he
get a special night. that was written in a newspaper. he get a special
night and it begun at 8.30 with a disc jockey. he was on the stage, i dont
know the name, with a two-record-desk and he played house music. the audienz
didnt like this kind of show and after a view minutes the stravinsky hall
at montreux was a hail of catcalls (Pfeifkonzert) and the people shouted
buh, buh. ok after 45 minutes it was over.
and as second artis came jimmy vaughn. he played a solid concert but without highlights. it was okay. after this concert the blind famous guitar player jeff healy played 3 songs with jimmy and his band.
then gary moore started about 11.30 with his concert. it was nice to see guy pratt again. i saw him twice at basel at the pink floyd concerts. gary started with one good reason. unfortunately the sound wasn't very well. it was not possible to hear the soft sounds of the keyboard player. but the guitar from gary was excellent. he played quit a lot from the new album. for me the highlight was business as usual. this song is a century-song. but the audienz waited for stil got the blus i thought. because they werent very enthusiastic. the mood was good but the applause was only warm i would say. the reason why was perhaps the audienz didnt know the new album very well or it was the first time they heard the new songs.
he also playd old stuffs like out in the field. for me gary was a highlight for montreux. i also saw ELP, Supertramp and Clapton.
if you have questions to my impressions
please dont hesistate to contactme.

Subject: Re: Pori Jazz Festival!
Hello everyone!
Gary Moore kicked ass in Pori!
I haven´t seen or heard him so hot since the eighties. He seems to be in great shape physically and was smiling and truly enjoying himself throughout the whole gig of 95 minitues.
It was great to hear him play like the rock guitarist Gary actually is at heart on songs like "Over The Hills And Far Away" and "Out In The Fields". Lots of energy, speed, fire, emotion and long, sustained notes just like in the old days. When Gary plays like this, there is noone in the world to touch him. Well, all you pre-blues days fans knows exactly what I´m talking about.
The news songs sounded a lot better, more alive and heavier compared to the, in my mind, too modern sounding record "Dark Days In Paradise". I mean, I´m to old fashioned to dig drum loops and that bass n´drum production. Sorry!
The set he, Guy Pratt, Gary Husband and Magnus Fiennes played runned as follows:
1. One Good reason
2. One Fine Day
3. Cold Wind Blows
4. I Have Found My Love In You (with
a great extended guitar intro)
5. All Your Love
6. Always There For You
7. Oh Pretty Woman
8. Still Got The Blues
9. Walking By Myself
10. Business As Usual (Absolutely
AMAZING! His best lyric EVER and some fine guitar playing)
(encore)
11. Out In the Fields (the whole of
Pori went wild on this one)
12. Over The Hills And Far Away (first
time I´ve seen people play air guitar at a Moore gig in eight years
or so)
(encore)
13. Parisienne Walkways (very looooong
and improvised with an inspired Gary in top form. When he eventually found
the sustained note, it became one of the longest I´ve ever hear him
do)
What more can you ask for? Well, a lot I guess. Even if this set was a big improvment to his blues gigs, there are a lot more old number I´d like to hear. You know which ones, and so do Gary actually. Maybe next time, as it seems like the latest record is not doing too well.
I missed one of my news faves, "Like Angels" where Gary actually plays the first part of the solo with a screw driver instead of an ordinary slide piece. I don´t know why he dropped this one from the set. I think it should be his next single.
Also "Where Did We Go Wrong" was missing from the early gigs on this tour, but I can live without that one.
The concert was a complete success in front of about five thousand (or so) enthusiastic Finns. He seems to have a pretty big hard core following there. A bunch of guys where screaming for "Run To Your Mama" during the encores!
Over and out,
Jörgen Holmstedt
Comment From Ole-Johan:
Gary decided to drop 'Like Angles',
since the song slowed down the crowd at the festivals. It's a pitty. I
hope he will include on the DDIP Tour this fall.

Gary Moore ended the Molde Jazz Saturday evening. The concert could be
heard all over the city.
7000 people inside the fences at Romsdalsmuseet is beautiful outdoorstage heard the song Gary is most known for, 'Still Got The Blues' and some other highlights.
Nearly 2000 people stood outside the fences and watched the concert. In Moldelia people could just go out on their veranda in the warm summerweather to enjoy the Jazz festival's last outdoor concert.
Gary Moore will come to Norway once more this year. He is the headliner at the 6th Hell Blues Festival, in Soer Troendelag, 11th-14th September. (NTB)

Romsdalsmusset
Gary Moore skipped his new songs. He played his greatest rock & blues hits. That he did perfectly right.
The songs on the new album 'Dark Days In Paradise' er miles from Moore's classics. Moore's new stuff is boring. He has gone from guitarbluesrock which he managed, to sort of clones of the several musical styles that doesn't work together. From time to time they give a disgusting feeling to be in a machineroom of an old steamer, in a birdnest, and in the keyboard to an bulgarian "Mountainhoteltablemusician". These are irritating elements when Gary Moore plays guitar.
But luckily Moore skipped this heavy crap after 5-6 obliged songs from the new album. From a version of 'Still Got The Blues' played with full score, the quality of the concert arised safely upwards. Hot late night memories was floating through the head. The 45 year old from Northern-Ireland was changing guitars continuously, and energically kept on playing with one classic after the other. The only classic we missed was 'Empty Rooms'. Hands clapping in air, shouts about 'Moore, Moore', and an excellent Gary Moore followed up with two encores: The Catchy folkrock song 'Over The Hills And Far Away' and an enormus guitarsqueeze version of Parisienne Walkways. With this he managed to create more atmosphere than Clapton and the other legends managed last Staurday. And that ain't bad...... (Reviewed by Tommy Fossum)

NEW SONGS - LESS BLUES (Aftenposten
20/7-97)
Gary Moore went new and old
paths between the old timber houses and birches i Romdsdalsmuseet. Inpsite
of intense rhythms and soundvisions from the new album, 'Still Got The
Blues' still was the audiences favorite.
When Gary Moore is presented in newspapers, magazines, on recordcovers and before the concerts this is done with reference to 'Still Got The Blues'. This soft blues all the owners of a radio became familar with some years ago. Yesterday was Gary Moore was the main atraction at Molde Romsdalsmusset, where he played some new and experimental songs. He was surely recognizeable with his hairstyle and bunch of old hits. The new material is picked from the new album 'Dark Days In Paradise', as Moore says himself this is a long step away from the blues.
After the album 'Blues For Greeny' I didn't feel to do another blues album. I was in a stage where I wrote more melodic songs, and 'Dark Days In Paradise' is an resultat of that Gary tells.
Where have you got the inspiration
to the album?
I started to listen to more modern
music, Hip-Hop, Jungle and Drum&Bass, and tried to incorporate these
sounds in the songs I wrote, something that gave them another sound. The
album is an collection of very different songs, some are influenced by
what I did before and others are totally new - I count on that many will
be surprised by the result.
There is a red thread through the album, Gary Moore tells. I think you have to listen to it from start to end several times before you will get the topic - many has told me that this is one those albums that grows the more you listen to it.
From a topic view this is a quite dark
album?
Some songs express hopelessness, but
if you listen to it several times I think you experience what the album
title expresses - 'Dark Days In Paradise'. It's light and shadow in the
songs.
Gary Moore new CD has recieved varied feedback from the audience and the critics. But he is not so interested in if the feedback is positive or negative - himself is convinced that the songs are some of the strongest he ever wrote.
The songs describe experience I have made through a whole life, Gary Moore tells. I just let the memories float out, those who came first must have been the strongest ones and I wrote them down nearly automatically.
From the audience is dedicated response we can support that Gary Moore is a very good to tell about his personal experiences. Romsdalsmuseet was full of life, and the musicians were barely allowed to take a break, before the audience clapped and called them to the stage again.
This is really good, means Joern Wenn, who is 23 years old and has all the albums of Moore except for the last. This is the first time I am at an concert with Gary Moore, he tells.
What do you think of the new songs?
They are not the same as the old ones,
but the best song was of course 'Still Got The Blues' and the old rock
songs.
Joern Wenn and his friends got what
they wanted yesterday, real rock so it kicked hard.
But not all was too pleased. I had
expected some more blues, was Kolbjoern Hjertviks comment in good distance
from the stage. I might stay here to the end, maybe.

Gary Moore has left the blues with
his new album, not that he gets more interesting becuase of the change.
Now the style are more ordinary rock with impluses from fusion sound, as most artist have long ago left. There after he touches hypermodern jungle sound, at least this warns us that it's something new from the superguitarist. Moore uses much of synth programming, but this sounds makes this album over produced.
In return the guitar is not so in front as usual, as in Moores blues period, in which case are an big progress. I don't know where Moore are heading with this record, but I am willing to give him another chance

Seven years after his definitely worldwide

blues hero. And Thanks for that!
On 'Dark Darys In Paradise' makes ex-hard rocker with remembering, but short, past in Thin Lizzy an round trip in various styles without making up his mind.
It's modern, easy noisy songs, there the latinfeeling, hip-hop fog, britpopstrings and then what Moore does the best: The deep melancholy ballad, the lonely howls to the moon, accompanied by an guitarsolo, that gives you goose pimples.
That kind guitar solos don't stand in cue, and even it's really great moments and majestic mood (Very David Gilmour) is it under the title pop. There are simply not a single rock song , and that is disappointing.
With the year Gary Moore has become competent singer, but to use his bit moody voice be the main instrument in all the 10 songs instead of his divine guitar playing, is also a mistake.
Guy Pratt (Bass ex Whitesnake) and Gary Husband (Drums ex Level 42) are making solid rhyhtm section, but Pratt's playing deserves a warning at couple of places, ex in 'One Fine Day', where the riff is taken from 'Taxman' (Beatles) and in the long outfading in 'Like Angles' and 'Business As Usual', where his punching basslines sounds ridiculous and annoying.

NEARLY EMBARRASING (Score 2 of 6)
It's no more blues music from Gary
Moore. At least for now, and that's fair enough, he will never sound 100%
convincing inpart as blues guitarist. His biggest benefit in relation to
the blues, is that his 'Still Got The Blues' was strongly making a new
focus on the blues and the real blues musicians.
Gary Moore is on the way back to rock. On the way, beacuse his 'Dark Days In Paradise album isn't too impressive. There are highligts there, but the well known Gary Moore has presumeably difficulties to find where he want to go.
Gary Moore is heavy guitarist, and that is the track he should follow, instead of making a album that is sounding more or less uninspired and restless. When that's said, you can enjoy a great song like 'Like Angles' - in this song he plays he wellknown long smooth guitar solos. And his abillities in this song show where his strengh is. Why he should forget to be placed as a soft rocker. Even then it's better to choose the more or less heartful blues. A song like 'What Are We Here For?' is directly horrible, and in case for Gary Moore is this on the edge of the embarresing. An song like 'Business As Usual' isn't on the edge of the embarresing, it's embarresing. Two points because Gary Moore can play. But it's two very, very small points.

Molde Jazz International Festival 14.

Gary Moore at Romsdalsmuseet, 19/7-1997
Crowd: 6700 + 2000 outside the fences!
(Including at least 3 GAZ Subsribers)
Well, after 3.019 days since the last concert in Norway, Gary Moore played at Molde Jazz Festival. (The last concert was 13th April 1989, in Drammenshallen).
An introduction before the concert
review!!
Where is Molde?! It's not a central
place in Norway, but it's not a farout place either.
It's about 900 kilometers from Oslo,
or 9 hours drive! It's sited at the West Coast, but north of the famous
Norwegian Fjords.
I left Oslo at 19. July, 11.15. After couple of hours I picked up Arve Akervold (The Lyrics Administrator). There was only one 90 min. tape rolling on the car stereo, with DDIP and 'Burning In Our Hearts', 'Beast Of Burden', 'All The Way From Africa', 'My Foolish Pride' and we had left out the hidden title track 'DDIP' and 'There Must Be A Way', due to limited space on the tape. How many times we played that tape it's up to you to figure out, based on 2 times 9 Hours driving time!
I arrived in Oslo 2000 hours at the
20. July, after 57 hours since I left Oslo the 19. July.
What did we do?! 18 Hours driving,
18 hours sleep (two nights), 10 hours of hanging out in Molde and the rest
we used on resting and whatecer Are we crazy? No, just have 3019 reasons
to visit Molde and you just live ONCE!
Gary Moore arrived at the Hotel in Molde some past 1600 hours, straight from Pori in Finland. A couple of plane changes from Helsinki, Finland to Molde!! He entered the stage at 1800 hours, so there was no soundcheck!
There was no camera control!! So we took some pictures, the best once will be in Picture Gallery soon as we get them developed and scanned!
The show started with:
ONE GOOD REASON
Starting of with a percussion sample
on the keyboard to Magnus. The songs sounded nearly like the album version.
But the vocal nearly drowned with music, with some more pratice this song
should work fine in the set. they continued with:
ONE FINE DAY
They played it like we have heard
it on the album, the vocal didn't drown like on the previous song. This
is still not one of my favorite songs on the album. They could easily left
it out. A boring song, even live!
COLD WIND BLOWS
The song sounded great! Well played
with band, even maintaining the sound from the album.
I HAVE FOUND MY LOVE IN YOU
Started of with a keyboard intro,
then with a quite intro for a couple of minutes while Gary plays some great
guitar, making the song stronger than the album version. A must for an
extra song on CD-Single. A great preformance. A bit longer guitar solo
was missing!
ALL YOUR LOVE
Gary swapped guitar to the Les Paul,
the audience wass getting wilder!!
The sound of the song was bit rougher
than I have heard from the before!
Sounded like Gary was using some more
Fuzz on the guitar in the first half! Before he turned to the known clean
sound. When Gary got to the chorus the audience got even wilder! Great
version!
ALWAYS THERE FOR YOU
Another keyboard intro, sounded like
a jungle full of birds etc.
Here Gary was really enjoying himself
on the intro riffs, dancing and smiling!
This live version was much better
than the album version! More guitar!
But they had boosted up the keyboard
to much, and nearly destroyed the song.
Great guitar solos, played so great!
This song can work live, but it needs some re-arrangements. It was said
this song never works live, but it was better than 'One Good Reason'
OH PRETTY WOMAN
It was great to hear some blues songs
as well, even they got more rocky than before.
STILL GOT THE BLUES
A great version! You could definitely
tell it was the audience's favorite.
What more can you tell!
WALKING BY MYSELF
A must to play on festivals, the crowd
was singing along! Enjoying themselves and waking up from the previous
song! A very good version!
BUSINESS AS USUAL
13 minutes++ on the album, it was
not shorten when played live!
It was great to hear this song is
workin' live, and many other artist would have skipped a song like this
on the live set.
OUT IN THE FIELDS
Started of with the album version's
intro on the keyboard!
From there it was played very straight
forward, I was missing the great versions Gary played in '87 and '89. The
big difference was the middle section, was played very quite and long,
before it was kicked hard again! Too boring! But the crowd loved it!
ENCORES:
Gary got back on the stages, testing
the guitar! Gary was saying this song is about Ireland, and asking: "Anybody
from Ireland here?" Most of the audience shouted yes! Gary replies: Yeah
right, just me then! And kicked off with:
OVER THE HILLS AND FAR AWAY
Oooops, the lyrics wasn't too easy
to remember! Gary missed them on a couple of places! He had to smile, since
the crowd knew them where he missed!! I actually missed the creativity
in the song, it was more played like the album version. The guitar solo
was great!
PARISIENNE WALKWAYS
Another great version, a bit different
sound! Still a favorite of the audience! He held the note for 35 sec!!!!
What more can you do, than to enjoy the song!
Gary was in great shape that night,
I haven't seen him happier while playing on stage.
I am looking forward to see him again
on the tour this fall!!
Long before the concert, Arve and I went up to the stage to see what was happening! We met a Cool Guy called Graham Lilley (Gary's Guitar Tech!), we had a chat for some minutes before he had to string some guitars.
After the show was finished it was time for a great moment! Finally time to meet the Master! Waiting 20 mintues then the tour manager fetched me, and I walking on my last meters to meet Gary Moore. Then there was the moment, shaking hands with Gary. I was delivering the final edition of The Gary Moore Bio-Discography 1969-1994 to Gary. on the behalf of The Danish Gary Moore Society (DDGMS). There was taken a picture with Gary, The Book and me to be featured on the Web-page!
I also handed Gary Moore a book of the released GAZ Issues (Only 1 made), and a sample of the web-site on paper. I look forward to hear his comments on the various items he got.
We talked for approx. 15 minutes, before he had to rush to a last minute radio interview for the Norwegian Radio P4. I asked him about 'Like Angles', and told him it sounded a lot like the BBM sound. He admitted he had started to write on it at that time. He was quite convinced he was in Norway at the 'Still Got The Blues Tour', but he remembered he was in Denmark three times! I am sorry to say I don't remembered everything we talked about, but I have remember the most important stuff!
The excitement before meeting Gary Moore was mixed. Would this be disappointment or a great moment. Especially when you have used lots of money and time in the music of Gary Moore. It was a great moment, it's a really great guy!
We ended the conversation with; 'See
ya in Hell'.
NEXT STOP; HELL....................................
then Oslo and then Copenhagen....................................
