Gary's Action Zone
------------------------
Welcome!
------------------------
Gary's first gig for the DDIP album is played, we have couple of reviews from the gig. More fans reviews of DDIP album has arrive at the web-page and in my mailing box. We hope that anyone attending the concerts will send us their reviews and hopefully the played set list.
A new date in Norway are confirmed,
Hell Blues Festival outside Trondheim at 12th September.
There are circulating rumors about
German dates, but these are not confirmed yet. When they are confirmed
we will let you know soon as possible. The Prague concert is definitly
cancelled, and it's NOT Gary's fault. Remaining dates are listed in this
issue, for the complete concert date list check out the Tour Dates page
at the web-site.
I have recieved a lot of reviews from the Gary Moore Bible author Rene Aagaard and the co-author Finn Jensen from Danish Papers. I will do my best to translate these reviews to english, to feature in the next issue. We would be pleased if you have any other reviews from your country, to translate them to english and send them to GAZ. I am sure many are interested how the music press from different countries thinks of the DDIP album.
While I was in Germany DDIP dropped from 39 to 60 at the Top 75 Album list. If you have any chart posistion from your Country send them to GAZ. In Norway DDIP entred at 32 at Top 40 Albums, Climbed to 27 place in second week, the fall to 39 in third week and then got out of the Charts. Hope that the Molde gig will help the interest for the album in Norway!!
Within September I will get a new e-mail and an address to my web-site. Because of a merge between two major internet providers in Norway. More info when I have got the complete info. At least my old e-mail address will be automatically forwarded to the new one for minimum a year! I am look forward to see how smooth this change will go!
Because of much to do at my work lately, I haven't had time to write my review of the album yet. I will try to find time to write it for the next issue.
We are also planning to release FAQ regarding Gary Moore during fall '97, so we ask you to send in questions about Gary Moore 'gaz@sn.no', sooner the better! We will surely remind you in the future issues of GAZ about our FAQ.
ATTENTION! Norwegian and other Gary
Moore fans attending Molde Jazz Festival!!! If you would like to have a
GAZ meeting before/after the concert send me an e-mail, so we can arrange
something i Molde. Suggestions with places to meet are welcomed, and I
can be reach at mobilphonenr: 920 59 222 (All Day) at the 18 & 19 July.
Next issue is planned end of July.
Best Regards.......

While the new album is a real departure for Gary, I think it contains some of the best work he has ever did. I don't know how sales are doing but it deserves to be a big hit. Gary shows he is not just 40 notes a second!!!

Hi there!Has anybody heard the new
album so far? I live in the USA atthe moment, where it seems to be impossible
to get the newalbum. But everything I've read about it is like "the style
has changed, the new album is very pop-orientated", which to me soundslike
the new album totally sucks, and people here (who arefaithful and committed
Gary fans) just don't dare to say that.Ole, why don't you post a review
on the "Dark days in para-dise" page? Besides, I got problems to read the
GAZ-issues, your serverdoesn't respond or something. I am a German Gary
Moore fan, I've seen Gary five times. The first time was on his ' Wild
Frontier'-tour and each of his concerts is just a celebration of his great
guitar work.I didn't like the Blues period too much, but it was stillacceptable,
the guitar was still whining like in the goodold days of the eighties. But
now? Pop and not a lot of guitars? I think I'm done withthe man, is he
on drugs or has he just entered his midlifecrisis, where he feels to make
a change or bullshit like that. But we still have some great albums to listen
to, but unfortunately these are all memories. To recite a BBM-song: "Why
does Gary have to go wrong?"
Thanks for listening.Joerg.

I know it's not the right place but for anyone who wants to know here's what Gary played at last nights ig in London. He played everything from the new album except for What are we here for and Afraid of tomorrow, Gary also played All Your Love, Still Got The Blues, Walking By Myself, Out in The Fields, Over the Hills and Far Away, and finally Parisienne Walkways (what a pity the feedback didn't work properly). I'm gad to say that there was much more guitar than on the new recordings and Gary playing just gets better and better. I only hope he'll come back to the UK for some moore gigs later in the year.

Well, I think Gary Moore has written his masterpiece with the song 'Business As Usual'. The lyrics and Gary's voice brought a lump to my throat. It was moving. The strings were wonderful. I enjoyed the diffierent styles throughout the album. My favorites at this time are 'Cold Wind Blows', 'I Have Found My Love In You', 'What Are We Here For?' and "Always There For You'. However, 'Business As Usual' just blew me away. Thanks, Gary, for a sharing your life with us.

HMV doesn't have the album listed yet
in Canada as available on import. I am dying to hear it because I understand
it gets away from the boring (sorry but that's the way I feel!) blues stuff
he was doing. I have over 70 albums of Gary's including bootlegs and am
very proud of my collection. I made three trips to 5Europe in the 80's
just to shop for Gary Moore records. I hope this album gives me reason
to return to his music.
Cheers!

I think the new album is great! I'm not quite sure I wanted another blues album. The album shows a great deal of diversity and Gary is trying different styles which is great. Lyrically Gary has always written about lost love and relationships gone wrong but as always, he does it in a mature way. I for one can relate lyrically to at least 5 of the new songs including "There must be a way" I really don't like the 40 seconds of silence before the title track at the end of the CD it's very annoying. You guys in Europe and England are lucky to see him live he hasn't played in the states in so long. You'd think for one of the "Blues" tours he'd play Chicago!!! This is a GREAT website!!!!

yes, I do have a comment because I
am under the charm of this album and I cannot quite tell, why. Whenever
I listen to it, I can "smell" some strange vibrations, some strange climateof
the whole thing and I cannot trace an interview whereGary Moore would answer
the IMPORTANT questions, like: whythere is so much DARKNESS on this album.
"Darkness" means some undefined devilishness or... how should I put it...it
is some kind of darkish mood. Does it come from his previous experiences
(as could be judged from the lyrics to the lastsong), or does it reflect
Gary's own nature, or is it foreseeing something that might happen in the
future? Has anyone seen or heard an interview where Gary Moore wouldsay
where these strange moods come from? If so, pleasee-mail me. I promised
my listeners (I work on the biggestnational network in Poland, Channel
3 of Polish Radio), that I would finally, somehow find the answers.
Yours, Beata Pawlikowska

Hi Ole-Johan,
first of all, I'm going to attend both
Austrian GM concerts. Maybe people would be interested that the gig on
Juli 11th is the "Stadtfest" and is free. I just hope that Gary wont cancel
the gigs in this area (Austria and S. Germany) like he did a lot in the
past. (so far: two gigs in Munich, 2 in Vienna and one in Frankfurt were
cancelled that I had tickets for). So, better call before you travel to
a Moore gig in
this area.
To the new Album: I hated the single and think the album is marginally better. I have no idea what people gary wants to reach with this music. I do not think that anybody who is not already hooked on gary will ever buy this CD.
When I bought my first GM record, it was when he was in his hard rock phase. (Run for Cover). When Wild Frontier came, it was a change in a good direction. After that I started to buy everything of Gary that I could get my hands on. (Even terrible stuff IMHO like K2 or Deep Green or the FGTH single - if you know what I mean :) .
When Gary made the transition to blues,
I went right with him - even though I liked
the stronger works in Still Got The
Blues best. And now he is starting down paths
that I find hard to listen to. Techno
drumbeats? Reggae? Country Western?
I know what I want and I'd be surprised if any GM Fan wants something else: Good honest guitar work - long solos - and not that overproduced stuff that's on the radio these days.
My prediction to DDiP is that it will totally bomb. I know that I wont buy the international releases (japan, US, GB, CN...) of that particular album.
Thank you for listening

Subject: I saw the concert!
Hello there Ole-Johan and GAZ readers!
I have just got back from the Shepherd's Bush concert in London and it was excellent.
The purpose of the gig was to warm up for the European tour, and Gary played some new and old songs. He kicked off with the first four tracks from Dark Days in Paradise, with an extended version of 'I have found my love in you'. He did a very long intro which was really impressive!
After that Gary and the band played 'All Your Love', from 'Still Got The Blues'. Then it was 'Always There For You', played completely differenty to the CD track. He used much more guitar and it was much better.
The he took us back to the blues years again with "Oh Pretty Woman" and "Still Got The Blues". Business As Usual was next on the set. I had to leave early so I missed the end of the gig, but I enjoyed what I saw. I managed to get some photos taken, and I will email them to GAZ when I get them scanned (possibly in September).
I was stood right in front of Gary for the whole concert, and he didn't even take a look at me once! All of the photos I took were good close-ups!
David Thornton.

Subject: Review Dark Day s In Paradise
Who said this is something Gary has'nt done before? It must be someone who only knows Gary from his blues albums or so.
OK it's no blues. It's also no 'traditional'
hard-rock album. But I respect Gary to not repeat himself, allthough I
like his mid 80's rock style very much. I don't think Gary did so much
new things on the album. In fact the real good listener can hear several
GM-styles from things he did in the past. You can
hear some Colosseum II influences,
even some Corridor of Power ballads and even the gift on the album; the
not mentioned title track at the end of 'business as usual' has something
of the 'Jamaican Rum' track from the Phil Lynott album 'Solo in Soho'.
After two or three times listening to the new album I appreciate it already.
All tracks have their charms to me. The only one I do not like too much
is 'Afraid of tomorrow'. But on every album there is always a track that
could be left out. On the other hand we find typical Gary Moore jewels
like 'I have found my love in you', 'like angels', 'Where did we go wrong'
and 'Business as usual'. I like to mention two tracks especially: 'Like
angels': a ballad wich builds up to some classic Gary Moore guitar solos.
Just Great. And of course' Business as usual' yet another autobiographic
piece. It seems that Gary gets some special kind of magic when he plays
these type of songs. References to his past always include Phil Lynott
(!) He keeps doing this (like in Blood of Emeralds and Wild Frontier).
Also these kind of songs have the very special celtic athmosphere. Without
too much imagination you can hear Thin Lizzy's 'Black Rose'.
To conclude this review: The album
is worth the waiting and Gary deserves a big compliment!

Subject: Review of new singles
This review is a little late. However, living in the US it takes us a little longer to pick up this stuff. I have not picked up the album. I am holding out for a US release. I know the singles will not get released here so I caved in like I always have to. $25 for two singles. Ouch. I also got Black Sabbath Seventh Star. For those of you who aren't familiar with that, it is great. Anyway, here we go.
One Good Reason:
Did not like it the first listen.
It is growing on me. Sounds like something Soundgarden might do. Slow,
heavy, string section, slide guitar. A little short though.
Burning In Our Heart:
A dance tune. Not really a guitar
song. Some funky rhythm playing. Reminds me of Bowie from the White tie
album. Not bad.
There must be a way:
Reggae. Not much guitar again. I am
not a big reggae fan and this is not really very good reggae in my opinion.
It is okay.
Beasts of burden:
Instrumental. Reminds me of a movie
theme. Pretty good. Gary holds back on his playing a little though.
I would say the above single is for those who seriously collect GM. If you don't want to own everything I would not recommend it.
I Have Found My Love In You:
Very good. Reminds me of Jeff Becks
We Know, You Know from Flash but with vocals. When I listened to this new
material I kept thinking of that and Bowie's Lets Dance and White Tie albums.
All of which were produced by Nile Rodgers. Anyway a real good slow song
with nice melody.
All the Way from Africa:
The best song on either single. Very
long. Reminds me of Santana from his Milagro album. He finally lets loose
on his guitar.
My Foolish Pride:
Very good also. Closest thing to his
more recent work. Sounds a lot like Naked Flame from BBM. A slow bluesy
tune.
This single I would recommend to anyone who likes Gary Moore.
I wish the CD would get released here. I would like to hear it. It seems that Gary is going for more of a accessible sound and that he is trying lots of different styles on the singles. I probably would not have liked this 5 or 10 years ago, but now that I am a little older I can accept it.

Subject: Re: St.Poelten
Hi Ole-Johan,
Even the long awaited for weekends come around and after 9 years of staying away, Gary played again in Austria. To be exact - at the Stadtfest in St. Poelten.
The Stadtfest consisted of some 14 stages with music and events going on - most of them local acts though - and loads of people enjoying themselves. Of course I've seen the crowds only when I was looking for the main-stage on the Domplatz when there were mostly families with kids running around and when I left there was still a lot of partying going on. But back to the steets:
Music was supposed to start on the main-stage at 2pm with the Oysterband. The Oysterband who played some great scottish/irish Folk-rock hit the stage at 6 pm - a slight delay. In the meanwhile the audience was treated to Flashdance over and over and over ...
Next came the Temptations, playing to some 8000 people - the Domplatz was filled with people. People became restless when before and after the Temptations the soundchecks started again. But we were assured that Gary's set would not have to be cut short, so at least I was happy.
Then it was Jeff Healies turn - he was great: People! try to see him on his current tour - he has a second guitarist (Phil something) with him who is a wiz. When Jeff wanted to give a second encore - some guy of Gary's entourage made clear that it's Gary's turn now.
Some waiting ... the drum-mikes had not been connected correctly to the PA. Further delay ... then finally the lights went out and ENTER MISTER GARY MOORE! Come to meet 10.000 people on the crammed Domplatz.
I haden't seen Gary for 5 years and he looks older now - his scars look more distinguished. He came on stage with - One good reason - and for the first time since the Wild Frontier tour he wore no black. It was a yellowish-green longsleeve and white pants together with the sunglasses from the DDiP cover. Alltogether a real trendy look - "But not what I expected" (this sentence became the theme of the evening). He had no horns with him but a real BIG keyboard with the drum computer necessary for some of his new songs (yack).
Then came two more of the new songs
(I should receive a tape soon, then I can complete the playlist) then finally
a blues song (All your lovin'). Next followed some more of the new album
(Business as usual...)and a few more blues songs - (including Still got
the blues,...) then to my astonishment Gary
anounced that he'd play an alternate
with the title Feeling better now (or so) and played some well known blues
song (I was so hyped that my memory doesn't work correctly - please forgive
a fan).
I still don't know if this was a cruel
joke or if Gary decided in the last second that he doesn't want to play
the new song, maybe you've heard of some alternates? The show neared it's
finale - when I heard a well known and loved keyboard line... the surprise
was great when the Band started to play Out in the Fields. How long was
it since I heard this song live on stage? I freaked! It was great!
Then Gary left the stage. Knowing that it was 30 minutes past midnight, the audience screamed for their life to get an encore and it was well worth losing my voice there : ) Gary came back with Over the Hills from the Wild frontier album. It was absolutely wonderful. In the first few songs Gary showed next to nothing of his ability to play the guitar - with the last few songs he proved who is the master.
All in all a great evening (it ended half past midnight with fireworks) with many surprises (for me at least). On two occasions it showed BTW how young the tour still was, when they had to start one song over. And when they had a break in Over the hills. Still - Gary played next to perfect if not long enough. How good that the next gig is only 2 short weeks away in Wiesen.
