Gary's Action Zone
---------
Welcome!
---------
We are proudly presenting the first issue of 'GAZ'. It has been a tremendously lot of people wanting to subscribe, even before we had started. This encouraged us even more to get this running, and now we are here with the first issue. Hope you will enjoy it.
The meeting place where you don't hear
'Gary? Who!!', 'Still NOT got the Blues' etc.
Feel home. All we want is MOORE!!
We are 63 subscribers now, and still
getting more. Following countries are now represented: USA, Canada, UK,
Ireland, Spain, Germany, Holland, Japan, France, Sweden, Norway, Barbados,
Mexico and Peru.
We are missing following continents:
Africa and Australia. It means we can say we are world-wide!!!
I will first present the three editors of 'GAZ'
- Tomoyuki Yamazaki:
is a freelance journalist living
in Tokyo, specialised in rock music. He has interviewed Gary Moore
for 'Music Life' magazine in May '95, and other artists he interviewed
are Ozzy Osbourne, John Sykes, Eddie and Alex Van Halen, Glenn Hughes,
Michael Schenker etc. His hard-earned money is usually spent on rare
records, including GM rarities.
- Lennart Hedenstrom:
I am a Swede and I have been
a fan and collector of everything Thin Lizzy related, with a special interest
in Gary Moore, since the late '70s. I have been on the internet more than
ten years now and it is with a great pleasure that I see that finally a
mailing-list dedicated to Gary Moore is started. I am also a co-editor
of Coast To Coast - The Glenn Hughes Electronic Fanzine here on the internet.
- Ole-Johan Backman:
A Norwegian currently running
'Emerald Blues' - Gary Moore fanzine aside this, and which was established
January 1994. He works with accounting and lives in Oslo, capital of Norway.
Is a devoted Gary Moore Collector. He is the co-ordinator of the editors.
We hope to help you out with any question you have about with Gary Moore and his music.
Why 'GAZ'? It's a nickname for Gary, and Gary is playing on a track called 'Gaz' with Gary Boyle on his album 'Electric Glide'. What we also call 'GAZ' is Gary's Action Zone, where the fans can take action if you are missing something.
In this issue of 'GAZ' I have clipped out the most interesting news from early 'Emerald Blues' issues. Most of you haven't subscribed this Fanzine, so therefore I believe this will give much handy info. I will also be running 'EB' aside this. The content will be the same, except for the submissions that I will make a summary of in 'EB'.
There will be sections with submissions from you, and all the mails will be uncut. You can write anything, also if you are wanting to buy/swap/sell records.
The plans are to release an issue every 5 weeks, so issue 2 is scheduled in week 13.
- Ole-Johan Backman
The content issue #1:
1. General News
2. Collectors News
3. Submissions - questions/answers
4. Submissions - Trade of records
etc.

1. GENERAL NEWS
---------------
THE MASTER OF LES PAUL '59 IS RECORDING!!!!
As some of you already know Gary has started to record for a new album. It's expected to be released in autumn 1996. What kind of style it's gonna be, was it hard to get an answer about from Gary's management. I guess a Gary Moore rock album.
Gary Moore is featuring in the magazine Guitar Technique Feb. '96 issue and on the cover.
The concert 27th April 1995 are soon due to release. It should feature following tracks: The World Keep On Turning/I Loved Another Woman/Merry Go Around/If You Be My Baby/Long Grey Mare/(*)/Need Your Love So Bad/You Don't Love Me/Driftin'/(+)/The Same Way/Since I met You Baby/Love That Burns/Stop Messin' Around - Encores: Showbiz Blues/Dust My Broom/Jumpin' At Shadows. The management told me which tracks were not included from the concert and it was: The Stumble (*) and Key To Love (+), The sign is refereed to where in set list they was played.
The two 'Thin Lizzy' gigs in Manchester 15. March and London 17. March will not be guested by Gary Moore.
Irish Network 2 TV broadcast "The Rocker - A Portrait of Phil Lynott" on 3rd January 1996 (later broadcast on BBC as well). Gary was interviewed, and a rare video from the Skid Row era (featuring both Gary and Phil) was aired as well.
Phil Lynott's mother Philomena Lynott has published a book entitled "My Boy" (Hot Press Books), which is all about her boy Philip. In it, Gary is described as "the only person in Lizzy camp to whom I never became close to"... The book is an essential read to all who's into Lizzy (if you're into Gary's music, you have to give a listen to all their albums).
Vertigo MIGHT re-release their back catalogues of Thin Lizzy CDs in a remastered form. The lineup should include "Black Rose", "Nightlife" and "Life", on which Gary played.
Gary should feature in a film called 'Searching For Jimi' with a Jimi Hendrix song called 'The Wind Cries Mary'. Gary is also talking about Jimi and his influence he had on Gary. It will most likely be released 1996, then only on video.
A observant GM fan has found different lyrics sung live of "All Messed Up" at Boeblingen, Stuttgart, Germany 12.04.87 concert. The lyrics go like this: "The Party Is Over; Can't F**k No More; My D**k Is Hurtin'; Can't Find The Hole..." and so on as normal. I have listened through Tokyo, Japan 13.07.87, Ruisrock Festival, Finland 02.08.86 and found the same lyrics! I hope you understand my censoring of two words of the lyrics.
Albert Collins is out with a new live CD called "Live '92/'93". Gary Moore is not on it, but he is in the thank you section. There are recordings from 10.07.92 Montreux and the two very last concerts he played 4. & 5. September 1993 in USA. This is a great live CD, a must for blues fans.
A member of Skid Row guested Scandinavia in November. 9th November 1994 was Noelaig Bridgeman in Oslo, he played in a Band called "The Bucks" from Ireland. The vocalist was nobody else than Terry Woods. known from The Pogues, his work with Phil Lynott and from Dr. Strangely Strange with Gary Moore and Brush Shields. They played Irish influenced music and The Pogues songs. Even Noelaig had a lead vocal job to do. It was easy to recognise Noel, a bit older, shorter hair and new glasses comparing to the pictures from Skid Row in 70's.
Jack Lancaster's album "Skinningrove Bay" is recorded in the first half of 1978, even if it's released in 1980 German issue and June 1981 UK issue. So if you can find anytime from 1977 till 1980, here he was playing with Colosseum II/Thin Lizzy/The Greedies, I want to hear your opinion. His contribution has been refereed to "Kilten Castle" as for electrical guitar part. But he could have played all of the acoustic guitar part on the album, since he played acoustic guitar a lot during these guest appearances in the seventies. He also did a session with Rod Argent on his 'Moving Home' album, which was recorded in 1978. Here was also Jack Lancaster featuring, the studios for both 'Skinningrove Bay' & 'Moving Home' is Trident Studios, London. Till me your opinion!
What does Gary Moore play with Don Airey on "K2" album? I have read in an interview with Gary that he only played on a couple of tracks. I believe that he plays on following tracks:
- "Sea Of Dreams - (Part II)"
Reason: Typical screaming sound from
Gary's guitar, his special sound.
- "Song For Al (instrumental)"
- "Song For Al (Reprise)"
Here you hear the pure unmistakable
playing of Gary like "Parisienne Walkways". However, if you compare it
to "Song For Al (Reprise)" with vocal, you will hear a difference. The
guitar sound is not as sharp as the instrumental, and the playing is not
so hard and pure. This sounds more like a demo version.
- "Deathzone/Whiteout"
Here it is no question if it's Gary
playing. Typical Colosseum II playing in "Deathzone". "Whiteout" is remarkable
similar guitar playing to the "Running From The Storm" track, where also
Don Airey plays at "After The War" album.
Following guitar tracks by Keith Airey:
"Ascent To Camp 4", "Summit Fever" and "Julie (If You Leave Me)" All other
tracks should be without guitar, and if I have missed a track, it's most
likely with Keith Airey on guitar. However, comments are very wanted.

The rare 7" Back On The Streets - VIM-1358 released in Japan 1978 with different B-side: "Would You Rather Bee Or A Wasp". "Back On The Streets" is featuring in a 3.21 faded version. The Picture sleeve is very nice, featuring The Thin Lizzy on stage from Sydney 1978. You can find this picture on 'Back On The Streets' album, UK version on the Innersleeve, US version back on the album cover. 'GAZ' assumes a price tag of £ 50.- for the item in Mint condition, as a realistic price!! If you disagree and want higher/lower price, I look forward to hearing from you soon.
The Note book of "Ballads and Blues"
is now for sale. So if you need the guitar riffs from the three new songs
of Gary, here is the chance to get it.
BALLADS AND BLUES 1982 - 1994
1.85909.234.9 IMP UK 1995
Gary Moore's involvement with Eddie Howell in 1975, has been released on CD. The album was called "The Gramophone Record" on Warner Bros Records, featuring Gary Moore on acoustic guitar on the track "Miss Amerika". This CD release is named "The Man From Manhattan", this title track was not includes in the LP release in 1975, because of a working permission of the bass player. This track is also featuring Brian May on Lead Guitar and Freddie Mercury on Piano. This CD has been released on Bud Records in UK February 1995.
Gary's only single release from "Ballads
and Blues 1982-1994" was "One Day" with BBM, recorded under the same session
as the "Around The Next Dream". It was only released in Holland and Australia
as CD-single. As four track in jewel case, and as two track in paper cover
(Holland only). Otherwise it was released as promotional one track CD-Single
in UK with picture sleeve and in Spain without picture sleeve.
In France they have issued a 12" promo
with a beautiful picture sleeve (Same as the album, but in blues shades)
of "One Day" with "Falling in love with you (remix)" and "Parisienne Walkways
(live)". Both tracks from "Ballads and Blues". Cat.nr: SA8075 - Virgin

Those I consider as most interesting
for collectors are the two US CD-Singles and "Around the Next Dream" sampler.
Along with the withdrawn "City of Gold" CD-Single from Holland.
Snowy White's "Highway to the Sun" is released in Holland, with an extra track and different sleeve compared to the German issue. However, the extra track is not with Gary Moore. So the only track featuring Gary is 'Keep On Working' on both CD's.
MCA Records has issued another release of Gary's "Back on the Streets" and Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Variations" with original covers and innersleeve info in the booklet.
Promotional items from "Blues For Greeny"
are: 'Blues For Greeny Sampler' with four tracks ("I Loved Another Woman",
"If You Be My Baby", "Long Grey Mare" & "Showbiz Blues" Cat.Nr. CDVDJ
2784 - UK '95.
"Need Your Love So Bad" Promo CD-Single
same four tracks as normal CD-Single. Cat.nr. VSCDJ 1546 - UK - '95. One
track promo CD-Single " I Loved Another Woman" in Spain. Cat.nr: GMBGS1
- Virgin - Esp - 1995.
About the Amnesty International Press
Conference picture disc single. They exist in several pictures and edition
of 1-3 of each. 'GAZ' classifies this records to be pure bootlegs, and
not to be very collectable. Since only that picture has got something to
do with Gary Moore. If you are interested in this bootleg, you should never
give more than £ 5.00 for them.
'GAZ' is urgently looking for Live
Tapes from following Concerts:
4th & 5th October 1992,
Royal Albert Hall, London, UK
May 1992, Los Angles, USA
Any Live tapes with BBM in Spain
& UK.
The San Sebastian Concert is
reported to be the Best BBM gig.
Both Gary Moore and Manager
John Martin have confirmed it.
(But a Official Live CD with
BBM would have been great.)
If you have/get any of these
shows let me know ASAP, gaz@sn.no

NEW GARY MOORE BOOTLEGS:
Editor's note:
'GAZ' will review bootlegs even though
they are illegal. The reason we do this is to inform you which bootlegs
are worth buying and
which are only stealing your money
away. Therefore I will comment bootlegs and advise you which to buy if
you want to do that. If you buy bootlegs with Gary, and you feel pleased
or fooled of the bootleg you purchased, then share your experience with
other GM fans, like I have done below.
If you think it is not correct of me
to recommend bootlegs, then my answer is: If people absolutely want to
buy them, I can't stop you. Why not recommend the ones that are worth buying
and ask you to avoid others which are really crap!

This is a fair enough bootleg, Even
if you take consideration of the fact that Track 1 (+) is played by
Jeff Beck. Tracks 2 & 3 are official live releases from Stockholm 27.4.87
and so on... The only positive things to say about this bootleg is
the two "Back On The Streets" (*) outtakes and Demo with Glenn Hughes called
"Don't Ever Give Your Heart Away". Excellent sound quality overall. This
is a CD for fans that don't mainly collect tapes/video of TV/radio/live
concerts etc. Otherwise no need to buy it.
