| Welcome to Førde! Førde in Sunnfjord is situated at the end of the Førdefjord, more or less in the middle of Sogn og Fjordane, a county with a total of 107.000 inhabitants. The municipality of Førde has 10.500 inhabitants altogether, on an area of 590 km². The name 'Førde' relates to the word 'fjord'. Thousands of years with moving glaciers and floating rivers created the beautiful scenery in this area. The valleys, hills, the fjord and the five mountains surrounding Førde are essential parts of this varied cultural landscape. |

Førde has many sights and a rich cultural life with many and varied arrangements, activities connected to sports, theatre, museums and music. Førde International Folkmusic Festival is one of the largest festivals of its kind in Scandinavia. Sogn og Fjordane Theatre is situated in 'Førdehuset', a comprehensive house of culture hosting a wide spectrum of arrangements.
As an important part of cultural life, Førde has many places with good food. A visit at e.g. Rica Sunnfjord Hotel, Quality Førde Hotel or the newly established restaurant "Pikant" is highly recommended.
Førde has many schools with more than 1600 students and pupils altogether. Also many regional and national administrative institutions on differents levels are represented, e.g. Norwegian Broadcast, The national lottery supervision in addition to some of the institutions and departements of the Sogn og Fjordane County Council, as well as the main hospital of Sogn og Fjordane. Next year, a new road construction near the hospital will lead to a dramatic improvement of the infrastructure in the area.
