Chapter 12

Spinning through the disassembled listings, Ken and Roger picked out the portions of the WORM best suited. Via CERT's huge communications computer, they transfered the listings to a selection of hacker hang-outs like The Peter Norton Memorial, The Pornos WHQ and other notorious places. Using descriptions like 'How to break in at CERT' and 'Latest EISDN supervisor codes' to attract the attention of the least professional hackers.

The scheme worked well. The listings had been accessed dozens of times by the first day, and Ken estimated some 2000 persons world-wide had seen them.

Late the next day the first ones started falling in the trap. Ken and Roger received sarcastic messages telling them that the routines they had released were not theirs, but had been developed by someone else. Most of the messages came from unprotected sites, so Roger had no problem finding exactly who had sent them.

As the days passed, the list grew considerably and it was time to move. Together with two CERT agents, Ken and Roger picked up a Hoover and started roaming around to the different sites, hoping to meet someone that might have anything interesting to say.

After cruising around for some hours, as their search turned out to be a total waste of time, they decided to stop at an old computer hardware store and try to get some answers there. The shop was run by an old oriental name Yu-Cheng Min, who was famous for his ability to unlock the most complex hardware security systems. Ken thought the WORM, natrually consisting of only software might be easier to destory using the proper hardware.

Yu-Cheng, slightly frightened by the two CERT guards cooperated willingly and agreed to do some research on the matter. Roger also managed to pick up a few items he had wanted since he was a child from Yu-Cheng's well-stocked store.

Some of the addresses on the list were foregin sites which Ken and Roger could not possibly manage to check out for themselves. Roger was quite surprised that so few of them were foregin. With information spreading so rapidly on the international EISDN networks, there should have been more. The only explanation was that the WORM had originated nationally, and for some reason did not want to or manage to spread outside the country.

"Hey! Maybe that's the answer ?"

"What?"

"Maybe the international router's security systems are too hard for the WORM to crack and that's why it doesn't manage to spread overseas?"

"Do you really think so ? I mean - the systems can't be that hard. No system is uncrackable, some of them are just a bit harder to open"

"Well, tell me something then. Have you ever heard of someone who have managed to crack these systems ?"

"No, not that I can remember anyway"

"Well, there you have it."

"Come on Roger, it just can't be.."

"Let's head back to the CERT and have a look at the encryption schemes"

They turned around and headed back for the CERT complex. Roger was positive that he had come up with a solution in stopping the WORM from penetrating security systems. Ken on the other hand was not that certain.

It had started raining again. Just as the intensive sunshine seemed to last. They ran from the Hoover Deck to avoid getting wet with the sticky smelly rain. Inside they stared peeking and poking around in listings of security schemes for international network routers and bridges. The encryption schemes of course being way to hard for Roger to crack, some of the most intelligent mathematics working at CERT started joining in.

Many hours later they had reached a conclution. Unfortunately for Roger it seemed that the international network routers' security systems wasn't that hard to crack at all. There simply was no need for a massive security scheme. All these routers did was to convert and post information on to different networks around the globe.

"Oh, but I was so certain"

"I know. I almost started to think so too"

"I guess the answer lies in the old character set problem. Most of the routers convert data back and forth between different national character sets, and that's where the WORM starts getting into trouble. When certain routines in the WORM that are hard-coded are being converted they simply malfunction."

"Maybe we could program a barrier using a character converter ?"

"What do you mean ?"

"Let's say that we converted everything going in and out of a mainframe over to japanese, then converting it right back to english again"

"It would trap some of the simpler routines, yes, but what about the pure binary routines that the converter will not touch, and what about the biological mainframes ? There's no conversion what so ever on them"

"Well, you're right. It won't be a good barrier, but it will trap some parts. We could run some tests on it and see how effective it is though"

"Why not. We have nothing better to do. I just got a message saying that the foregin addresses on our list is being checked out tonight and tomorrow"

Ken powered up a small special mainframe designed to emulate another digital mainframe in every way. Also, they had a system that allowed them to emulate a short ring of EISDN sites so that if the WORM had any routines that detected that it was not on the actual EISDN network, they would be able to let the WORM run around without doing any damage. By picking the mainframe that had been hit the most by the WORM in the last few days, they could lure the WORM into the emulation mainframe by letting it pretend to be the battered one. As they traced the WORM around the EISDN network, they could see that it still occationally picked up a new routine making it larger and larger and therefor more and more dangerous. The WORM willingly slipped into the emulated ring, and Ken closed it. Though they had some of the most advanced tracing equipment, the WORM used stealth techniques that prevented them from tracing it except when the WORM accessed certain blocks of data they had put out as traps.

Although the WORM was nothing but bits and bytes, Ken and Roger felt like they had trapped a prehistoric monster.

The tests went well. They discovered that the bunch of routines were constantly updated. Whenever the WORM picked up a new routine, it checked which routines that had not been used for a long time, and removed them. Therefor, the WORM would at all times consist of the latest versions of trojans, viruses and decryption routines. With so many hackers on the EISDN network, the WORM had plenty to feed on.

By letting the WORM get locked in a small ring of them emulated EISDN network, Roger was able to force it to run through his character conversion barriers. Each time the WORM had to leave parts of it behind.

"Imagine - the same thing that has been a problem for computer users since the dawn of time will now be the end of this WORM. Thank God there has not been made a standard character system for computers world wide"

"Well, we still have to find a way to block the binary and biological routines. And I fear they will be violently harder to stop. I have virtually no knowledge of biological systems"

"Me neither. You knew a guy once, didn't you ?"

"Aw, what was his name again. I can't remember"

"Prince of something wasn't it ?"

"His alias you mean ?"

"Prince of - of - of - Darkness ?"

"Hohoho! Prince of Darkness. What a silly name!"

"I don't think he has the kind of technical knowledge we're after"

"Well, hey! It's been a few years since you last saw him. He might have gained something since then. I wonder where he lives now"

"The last I heard was that he lived over in Lithia"

"Lithia ? That's were all the riots are, isn't it ?"

"Shit. I wouldn't want to go there. That's suicide!"

"Aw come on Ken. It's probably quiet there now. I haven't seen anything about it in the news for ages"

"Well, if we expect to get somewhere we can't sit around on our asses" Besides, who would want to mess with us if we bring along a truckload of CERT guards ? Let's go!"

"Now ?! I haven't slept for days!"

"So ? I haven't either, but I took a shot of Penasteroine a couple of minutes ago, and it's starting to kick in. Have one yourself"

Roger took a shot of Penasteroine which was a drug much like Caffeine, except that it wouldn't make your digestive system go cement, like Caffeine will if you take large dozes.

All seemed well until they asked Mr. Brenauzcky for a troop of CERT guards to escort them. CERT was of course run by the government, and CERT guards in Lithia would be considered a threat by the government and would probably be destroyed within minutes. Ken and Roger simply had to go on their own. Mr. Brenauzcky predicted that they would have a much larger chance of surviving if they went alone. Suddenly the plan didn't seem that great anymore.

Still, Ken pulled the throttle and shot the unmarked CERT Hoover off the platform and into the dark wet sky. The trip to Lithia was quite a ride, so tried to get some much wanted sleep. Of course the Penasteroine had just started working, so sleeping was out of the question.

"I wonder how Tanisha is doing. I've almost forgotten all about her"

"Yeah, sure. Like you could forget"

"It's true. All this work has almost made me forget her"

"I'm sure she's allright. Well, all deep frozen to be exact"

The hours passed and they expected to see the sunrise, but they didn't. These parts of the country were so contaminated that if you saw something in the sky that looked like the sun, it probably was just the navigation lights of some Hoover passing by. Lithia had been troubled by riots for many years, and the town was run by gangs and criminals. Not the number one choice for a quiet holiday. The town once were the residential area for a huge number of people, but today there were only some ten high buildings left. The rest were ruins.

Ken found a fairly safe place to park the Hoover and they covered it as best they could with garbage and old scrap metal. Ken now noticed that they had landed close to what had been a small lake now with anything but water in it. On the left side, there were two high buildings with large antennas on top. On the right side, the remains of a small houses and some trees. It was pitch dark. Roger commented on the high antennas on the building and was wondering who would have use for such prehistoric equipment. Suddenly a ray of bright laser shot from the roof of the building and impacted heavily on the other side of the lake throwing up earth and dust. Ken and Roger jumped to safety behind the wreck of a car. Seconds later the laser fire was coming from the point where the first one had hit. They could hear the echos of the powerful laser generators in the distance. Again the laser fired from the far side of the lake. This time hitting something on the roof at impact. A large ball of flames and smoke shot up from the building and pieces of metal started raining down on them. Ken pointed to a small wooden boat lying at the shore. They both ran towards the boat as another laser shot was fired. This time hitting the base of the antenna making it tilt to one side. Again a shower of scrap metal fell on them. Roger started paddling for his life to avoid being scredded by the scrap metal. As they reached the center of the lake, a laser was fired from the other building towards the same point. Shots were fired back and forth. Sometimes missing the building hitting the hill behind it. Ken and Roger looked up at the rays passing only meters above them. It seemed like they had landed in the middle of a warzone. As they reached the opposite side of the lake, Ken could see that it had started burning on the far side of the lake. The firing stopped. They could hear people shouting, but because of the hills surrounding the area, it was hard to tell from where it came. They decided to take cover under a tree that had fallen into the lake.

"Tie the boat to that branch and let's sit here 'till this thing is over. My God. I've never seen live lasers before. I thought only the millitary had access to such powerful lasers"

"Someone in this town quite clearly has access to them too"

Roger turned around as he hear footsteps coming towards them.

"What are you doing here! Get them hands up and walk slowly out of the boat. No tricks!"

Roger stepped slowly out of the boat and on to the shore. They were handcuffed and pushed along a small passage up to one of the high buildings. Someone opened the heavy steel doors and they were pushed into an elevator. Ken tried to wisper something to Roger, but was stopped by a nasty blow to the head by one of the men. The elevator door opened and they were again pushed forward into a short corridor. The corridor led to other short corridors on both sides. In short a maze of corridors and passages.

"I found these two sneaking around the lake just now"

"Take them to the boss. I'll bet he'll be happy to have a little chat with them"
