Some general information about the Norwegian schools

The new Norwegian curriculum L-97 has as its basic ideas that the school gives the pupils - in greater extent - the possibility to learn by participating. This plan can be found on the Internet: The curriculum for the 10-year compulsory school Or you can check out the english version of The Compulsory School Reform

The new curriculum consists of three parts, and contains:
-A general part, which defines the over-riding objectives for all activities in the school.
-A document laying down the principles and guidelines for the teaching.
-A set of subject syllabuses defining the objectives and the content of the education in each subject.

The curriculum is based on two main principles:

All pupils are taught the same basic, centrally defined subject matter, which is extended gradually in the course of theschooling. The common content of the subject syllabuses shall be supplemented locally and shall be suitably adapted for each individ individual pupil. The education shall reflect a progression that ensures good coherence and development, adjusted to the abilities and aptitudes of the pupils in each age group.

The content of the curriculum is organized into subjects. Nevertheless, the different subjects should be considered in relation to each other, to show cross-connections.

The pupils shall examine, research, search, collaborate, compare, discover……
The verbs in the curriculum L-97 leaves no doubt of what kind of school we wish to create:

A school with active, creative pupils who work scientifically.

Where is Norway..? On the map of the world you will see that Norway is situated far to the north in the western corner of Europe. Norway shares borders with Sweden, Finland and Russia, but our largest neighbour is the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Our country's official name is the Kingdom of Norway, which in addition to the mainland includes the Svalbard archipelago and Jan Mayen. Norway also has territories in the Antarctic region. These are Bouvet Island and Peter I Island.
