Copthall

From the protest at Downing Street Because of the quality of the pitch and terraces at Underhill, Barnet needs to find a place to build a new ground. Copthall was seen as an ideal place for the club and Borough to build a sporting complex. Not only for the football club, but for sport in general in the area.
But the Mill Hill Residents Association and environmental organisations found reasons to stop the building. As most of the area of Barnet Copthall was surrounded by greenbelt.
The final decision would be made by environmental secretary John Prescott and he wouldn't let this opportunity go past him, and this summer he stopped the plan and thereby made the future of Barnet FC very uncertain.

An indication of what might to happen to barnet and other football clubs if the government does't turn. Proof that even the biggest clubs support the protest Michael Edwards hands over the protest at Downing Street No. 10

The Downing Street Protest

On the 17 July 1999 more than 700 supporters representing around 20 league clubs attended a protest outside Downing Street 10 to make clear for the government what they thought about the way they treat the grass root sports in general and more specific the grass root football.

At No. 10 the Chairman of Keep Barnet Alive, Michael Edwards handed over the internet guestbook that proved what kind of interest there are. He promised to be back in October to hand over the petition, which at the time(8 September) has 30.123 signatures.
