Chester-Barnet FC 0-2(0-2) Att: 2234 |
Goals |
|
Barnet beat Chester 2-0 in the opening game of the season. The goals came from Ken Charlery after 19 minutes and Mark Arber after 44 minutes.
Despite the score-line it was Chester who had the majority of the play, but the defending from the Bees was impressive both from the back four, and the ballwinner in midfield, the much improved John Doolan.
When the striker finishes off the chances like they did, then it is enough to take 3 points.
Again Lee Harrison made a string of good saves, and he seems to be starting off like he ended the last season.
All in all it was a good all round performance from the Bees.

Bournemouth-Barnet FC 2-0(1-0) Att: 3281 |
Goals |
|
In the Worthington cup First round against Bournemouth on Tuesday did John Still choose to go back to 3-5-2, despite the success of the 4-4-2
in the latest game. Barnet got off to a worst possible start when youngster James Hayter scored after just 6 minutes. Just two minutes before this, McGleish had a goal ruled out for an earlier infringement.
Barnet made a fight out of it, and Toms saw his good effort go just outside the post. Barnet might have had a penalty, when Warren brought down Sam Stockley, but the referee didn't give it.
18 minutes from time Bournemouth doubled their lead by subsitute Tuck.
In the last minutes Heald and Stein had a chance for each side, but it ended 2-0 and Bournemouth are favourites to go through to the next round.

Barnet FC-Exeter 2-2(1-0) Att: 1973 |
Goals |
|

After a promising pre-season and a opening day victory have the to last games got Barnet FC back to earth. The passing football of the friendlies is no longer there to see and Barnet is back with the secret love child of John Still, the long ball game.
At Exeter yesterday was Barnet outplayed for large parts of the game. The old hero in midfield, Paul Wilson, proved once more that the age have caught up with him, and having a £40.000 player like Danny Brown warming up the bench seems strange.
In the match programme John Still was full of praise for another youngster, Marlon King. Another player who never came further than the substitute bench in this game. When the game doesn't go according to plan, isn't it time to make changes?
Maybe the most important player in Still's tactics are Charlery. But unfortunately he isn't as effektive on the ground.
To go back to the game on Saturday, Barnet took the lead after McGleish reached an Frazer Toms cross to head in home from close range. The goal came against the run of play.
In the second half Exeter fought back. An 60th minute equalizer from Kofi Nyamah, brought the Bees under pressure. Just 8 minutes from time did Exeter think they had taken all three points, when former Portsmouth midfielder Jason Rees scored his second goal for Exeter. But Greg Heald made them think again. He proved his worth by heading home from a corner with two minutes remaining.
The Bees are now fifth, two points behind a quartet of teams lead by Brighton, who have had an impressive start.

Lincoln-Barnet FC 0-0(0-0) Att: 3113 |
Goals |
|
Both teams maintained their unbeaten run as Lincoln an Barnet fought out a no-scoring draw at Sincil Bank on Saturday.
Lincoln had the most out the play, but Lee Harrison was once more outstanding in the Barnet goal.
For the first 45 minutes, Lincoln dominatedthe play, and Paul Miller even had a goal disallowed after a foul committed by Gavin Gordon.
Their best chances in the first half came by their best player, Richard Peacock, Lee Thorpe and former Bee, Dave Barnett who had two good chances.
The best chances for Barnet came from Toms and McGleish.
Early in the second half the impressive Peacock set up Lee Thorpe for a chance, but Harrison once again made a good save.
A moment later did Greg Heald almost turn the ball into his own net from a Lee Philpott cross.
After that Thorpe and Smith went close for Lincoln, while Doolan and McGleish had the best chances for the Bees.
In the end Barnet has to be satisfied with the point they gained against one of the strongest teams in the division.

Barnet FC-Bournemouth 3-2(2-2) Att: 1697 |
Goals |
|
Barnet are out of the Worthington Cup after losing 4-3 on aggregate. It could have been all diifferent though.
After 21 minutes Mark Stein scored his secon goal of the night to give the Cherries a 4-0 lead on aggregate. The tie looked well and truly over.
But Barnet had a different view on that. Just four minutes after the second Cherries goal did McGleish come in at the end of a great Frazer Toms cross to make it 1-2 on the day.
The Bees continued to go forward and create chances and just before the break did Christer Warren pull down Ken Charlery and McGleish scored his second.
In the second half, it was Barnet who applied all the pressure. The first chance fell to Sam Stockley, but he diddn't hit the goal. Then in the 59th minute did Warren Hackett rise highest to a Darren Currie goal, and the score was 3-2.
Then John Still made three substitutions. The young attacking trio of Marlon King and debutants Gary Ansell and Ben Strevens came on for Stockley, Sawyers and Charlery.
The best chance came two minutes from time. When Bournemouth captain Ian Cox cleared a McGleish shot on the goal line.
The Bees were out, but the display suggested that the season ahead might be an interesting one. The ball was kept on the floor a lot more than in previous games, and the fans went home quite happy.

Barnet FC-York 6-3(2-3) Att: 1896 |
Goals |
|
After an even fought first half, the Bees was impressive after the break and the game ended 6-3.
After 11 minutes, a Frazer Toms volley went in past York teenager Russell Howarth. The lead didn't last for very long though. Former Blackburn star Mark Atkins equallized for York, but soon after the bees restored their lead when Howarth lost a Frazer Toms cross into the path of Scott McGleish, who nodded home from close range.
Later in the half a Barry Conlon double turned the game for the away side, and they went into the dressing room 3-2 up.
In the second half, Barent needed only four minutes to draw level. Captain Greg Heald headed in a Darren Currie corner. The same Currie got the 4th after 64 minutes. In this spell Currie was a dominant figure on the pitch, and he slid the ball to Sawyers to hit home the 5th.
Currie also had a hand in the 6th after 68 minutes. His cross was headed towards the goal by Warren Hackett, and Charlery hit home the rebound.
Barnet didn't score anymore, but again they had proved that they are capable of playing good football and that they might have a chance for promotion.

Cheltenham-Barnet FC 1-2(0-1) Att: 3518 |
Goals |
|
After the start of the season, the Bees was optimistic before their match against newcomers Cheltenham.
Barnet needed 11 minutes to get in front. A throw-in was headed on by Charlery, and Heald nodded the ball across the goal to Arber, who forced a magnificent save out of Cheltenham goalkeeper Steve Book, but the Bees' top scorer Scott McGleish got the rebound and made no mistake from six yards.
The minute after Barnet keeper Naisbitt saved John Doolan from an embarrassment when the midfielder mis-hit a backpass.
After that McAuley, Yates, Charlery and Toms had good efforts saved.
Then McAuley was fouled inside the penalty area, and he took the penalty himself. The ball hit the post and Barnet kept the lead for the rest of the half.
During the first thirty minutes of the second half, very little did happen. But after 76 minutes, headed in a Darren Currie corner to take a two goal lead.
Only four minutes later, Cheltenham substitute John Brough scored from a Neil Howarth cross. But Cheltenham couldn't score again, and the Bees climbed past Cheltenham and into the 5th place just two points behind leaders Exeter.
