We who live here in Tananger are very proud of our heritage and here are some proof of that proudness:

Tananger is the biggest community in the municipality of Sola, with has over 18 116 inhabitants (pr. 01. Oct.1996). The name Tananger is first mentioned in 1608, in a description of the area. First time we know of trading in Tananger was on the 2. September 1623, when a Dutch ship was illegally selling salt to the local farmers. After that, we hear of Tananger all the time. What made Tananger such a great place, was the splendid harbor. It was the only one between Egersund (way south) and Tungenes (way north). Here, big and small ships could seek refuge in stormy weather and it was also a short way in to Stavanger.
The first time we know lobster being exported from Tananger was 17. January 1672, when the Dutch captain Bernt Martens paid export duty for the lobster bought in Tananger. Later on this could be paid at the customs station
in Tananger.
After that it just took off.
Lobster was the most important factor in Tananger's development, and you can read more about that on my pages about the history of lobster catching in Tananger
. The lobsters were caught in big numbers around the islands outside Tananger.
I have relatives back to three of the first farms in Tananger. Two of my ancestors (my great grandfather and his youngest brother) emigrated to America.
Here you can read about their adventures over there.
Someone else that left Norway, did it onboard the fishing boat "Sjøleik".
The difference was that they left during the second world war.
A place to check out more of Tananger's past, is in the excellent museum that belongs to all of Tananger's inhabitants, but gathered and maintained by "Kystkultursamlingen I Tananger".

Just outside Tananger lies a small island with quite a lot of history. This is "Flatholmen", and here we find a lighthouse, also with a lot of history attached to it.
Further out in the ocean, we find the idyllic and beautiful island Rott,
with history back to the ancient vikingsaga. This page, I've just started, so it's not nearly complete.
Also take a look at my newest page, where you can see some pictures from older Tananger.

This is a lot about the older Tananger, more info. about the more modern Tananger is on it's way. While you wait, take a look at the excellent pages of Henning Hansen, good tourist info. about Rogaland.

Over the times the people of Sola (earlier called Haaland) have been counted in different ways. Check out my pages with different census'.

You will also find a lot of information about Tananger and it's surrounding areas on my Local history pages.

Take a look at the voluntary organisation "Tanangers Minne" . We try to gather, preserve and present the history of Tananger and the areas around.
