During the centuries, Lao and other etnical groups migrated across th Maekhong River and this is reflected in the local dialect, customs and cousine of Nakhon Phanom. Many unique folk dances, such as the Sri Kotraburi dance, regarded as the symbol of Nakhom Phanom`s long history and the Fon Phu Thai, Saek-Ten-Sak and So Tung Bung are performed on spesial occasions. The custom of extending a generous welcome to guests can be experienced during a Bai-Sri-Kwan ceremony what a potent brew of home-made liquor is usually served.

There are many ancient religous monuments in Nakhon Phanom. The most higly revered is Pra Thad Phanomoe Thad Phanom which dates back to the time of the Sri Kotrabun Kingdom.

Travveling to Nakhon Phanon

The distance from Bangkok to Nakhon Phanom is 735 km. If you`re driving, leave Bangkok on Highway No.1, Pahonyothin Road, to SARABURI. At the main junction, 107 Km stone, turn right onto Highway 2. Follow Highway 2, (Friendship Highway) pass KORAT to BAN PHAI (a district of Khon KAEN) and turn right onto Highway 23. Follow the route for MAHASARAKHAM, KALASIN to SAKHON NAKHON and then to Nakhon Phanon.

There are three flights aweek direct to Nakhon Phanom. There are also daily flights by Thai Airways to Sakon Nakhon, with transport from the airport to Nakhon Phanom.
