ISLAND TRIPS

These island trips can all be done in one day. This is a great way to enjoy what the eastern seaboard has best to offer. Sea, Sun, Sand , Sleep, Snorkel, Scuba-diving, Swim ...

Pattaya Offshore Islands ...

The two most well known islands around Pattaya are Koh Larn and Koh Pai. On Pattaya Beach there are ferry boats (near TAT Office), that leave regularly for the island of Koh Larn. (the closest, only 45 minutes by boat). There are also fishing and motor boats offering day trips to these islands. Just walk along the beach, talk to the operators, to find out the best offer. Some boats can hold 20 to 30 people. There's a lot of competition, so bargain. The following boat rentals are recommended by expats:

Sangkaew Beach Hotel
147 Beach Road (The Strip)
Tel: 428-085, 422-369
Prices range from B1,500-B2,000 for a daily charter.
Take your own food and drink. B100 for BBQ facilities. Catering can be arranged.

T-Tee Tour Service
Tel 425-762
Mobile: (01) 925-3686
Soi 7, Beach Road (near new TAT Office).
Prices range from B3,000 up to B6,000 for fishing.

Koh Larn

Being the closest, is the most popular with the tourists, therefore is also the best equipped. If you are looking for company, it is "the" island to go to especially on weekends when it is quite busy.

There are dozens of seafood restaurants and snack bars lining the beach. You can try your skills by parasailing, or hiring a water scooter by the hour (it is best to ride away from the shore since they can be dangerous for swimmers and snorkelers).

Koh Pai

If you're looking for a more secluded place with a beautiful white sandy beach, Koh Pai is your destination.

It is about 2 hours from Pattaya. The island is owned by the Royal Thai Navy and they are trying to keep it unspoiled. There are no restaurants on the island, so bring your own food and drink, and don't forget your sun umbrella since there is very little shade. It is beautiful place to swim and snorkel. We hop it will stay this way."

Sriracha Offshore Islands

Koh Si Chang

As you enter Sriracha on the Sukhumvit, take the 2nd road left (Surasak 3rd), pass the clock tower, keep to your right (market right-hand side) and turn left on Soi Jermjompol.

Boats for Koh Si Chang leave from the pier at 08:00, 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00 and 20:00 hours, and depart from Koh Si Chang to go back to Sriracha at 06:00, 08:00, 11:00, 14:00, 16:00, and 18:00 hours. The crossing takes 40 minutes. The cost is 20 Baht one way. Tel (038) 312-968/9.

The two principal sights can be seen as you approach on the boat from Sriracha: A Chinese temple to the right, and ruins of the old palace to the left. The island is enriched by a narrow right road, which you can walk around (about 3-4 hours), or hire a tuk-tuk for trips to attractions, and around the island.

Chinese Temple

The temple is much revered by the Chinese who visit the shrine in great numbers at Chinese New Year. It is part of Koh Si Chang history since the island was at some point, the Customs and Immigration for arriving ships. The island was the first Thai soil on which they touched foot. From the pier, walk 5 minutes up the small hill until you reach the temple staircase. Be ready for a very steep climb!! It leads you to the top of the shrine where there is another replica of the Buddha's foot print. From the foot of the temple, walk another 10 minutes. It will bring you to the north of the island, and to Hin Khom (known as Round Stone Beach.)

A kilometer further on follow the sign to Tampang Beach. This is the best beach on the island. (It is a 30 minute walk from the main road). The next attraction of the main road is the ruins of the King's Palace. This was the summer palace of King Chulalongkorn. The construction began in 1889, after Rama V's physician, recommended Koh Si Chang as a place for rest with a better climate for his royal consort and his son. The final visit of King Chulalongkorn was in 1893. Afterwards, the French gun ships attacked the Thai Navy (in a territorial dispute), and occupied the island from 1893 until 1907. Little now remains of the extensive palace structure. The main palace building is now located in Bangkok. Climbing the staircase, which once led up to it, you will find on the left Wat Asdang Nimitr, with a chapel and a pagoda in European architectural style, and a "bell rock" wrapped in cloth. It overlooks the small, shallow Tauvang Beach, a popular Thai picnic spot.

There are restaurants and food stalls on the island. You can finish your day swimming.
