Jan Kåre Hystad is educated at Bergen Musikkonservatorium. Since 1977 he has worked at Den Nationale Scene (the teatre in Bergen). He has also been active as a freelance musician in all genres. He is frequently used in studio sessions and appears in a number of recordings as well as radio and television programs. With Bergen Big Band he has played with artists such as Phil Woods, Paquito D'Rivera and Diana Krall. He leads his own band Jan Kåre Hystad Kvartet and is co- leader in Step By Step with Harald Dahlstrøm on piano, Ivar kolve on vibraphone, Yngve Moe on bass and Tarald Tvedten on drums and percussion. His latest release is Jan Kåre Hystad: Café Hysen Noir
